How do you keep yourself entertained?

+2. I go hunting to get away from all that crap.
Listen to the forest. It speaks volumes!

what he said. there is so much to see if you just take the time to look. then again I don't still hunt. treestands and sitting for hours in a blind is not hunting to me, so maybe I have more to keep me occupied? I like to hunt on foot, keep moving.

just look down at your feet, you'd be amazed at the amount and variety of life you can find in 1sq.ft. of moss or mushrooms. the tiniest details are by far the most fascinating.

leave the phone, ipod, watch, all that #### at home. get out and HUNT.

I think to answer that question you should also mention how often you hunt. If I only got out on weekends, or a couple/few times a week I would concentrate on the hunting, which I do more often then not.
But, I bow hunt every day, twice during archery season. I am in a morning stand and another in the evening. I think I would go wacko if all I did was listen to the birds. I spend so much time in the trees with them that they would miss me if I was gone.
I use my Blackberry, I surf CGN and a couple other hunting sites, I communicate with my family and my poor wife who knows what to expect on October 1st. I run my business, I make appointments for the day so I know where I am going to be once I come out of my tree, and plan them so I can be back in it at a decent hour. Knock the Blackberry if you would like, but without it I would not be able to afford to hunt.
If I only hunted a couple times a week do to other obligations I would leave it home, or simply turned off.
The best part is that I hunt for a living, so when I do come down I am just going to someone else's property with a rifle and a uniform instead of my bow.

Geesuz!

It's the only time in the year I have to get away from all that crap. To hell if they think they're gonna get at or have a go at me in the 'hunting office'.cou:

My God, man! That is the most bizarre hunting I have ever heard. I can't get my head around calling that hunting at all.

So the question I am quite seriously asking myself is: which one of us has lost touch with reality? Has your Crackberry made you nuts, or am I just so old I have lost touch with some truths about what is going on?

I've done variations of all of the above. I find sometimes I have to work from the woods in order to justify the amount of time I spend out there. I would sooner have to deal with the odd email and get more time to head to the woods than to take my 1 week of vacation and be back in the office after that. Thankfully I have a flexible employer :D

To each their own I say.

If you listen very carefully you can hear Saxton Pope, Art Young, Fred Bear, and many others who understood what hunting and nature is all about, rolling over in their graves.

Leave that junk at home, or at least, only use it in an emergency.

For those of us who still have young"ish" legs and a mild form of ADD it can be beneficial to stalk rather than wait.

Stay hydrated guys. It's suprising how much your mind starts to wander & dwell on those niggly little troubles we all have - when you're running low on water. Personally, I tend not to drink as much as the days get shorter & colder, except for coffee which further dehydrates. But the cool, dry weather can be every bit as moisture robbing as a hot summer day. Plus you can sweat alot hiking those trails. So don't forget to wet the whistle every now & then!

I've been sitting in this tree stand for about 45 mins now. Its opening weekend here in southern Ontario for Bow season deer. The excitement is still fairly high, but the sit and wait game is starting to get me, and I know it will only get worse.

What do you do keep yourself entertained/not fall asleep?

Did you bring a case of beer with you?

Interesting. I'm far from being an old fashioned snob, but can't fathom using my cell phone, cigars, food, coffee, etc when I'm on stand. I'm there for one reason only: to get my animal. Being 100% alert while motionless, soundless and smell-less all contributes to that success. I have sat for 10h on more than one occasion with no food, water or pee break to achieve that and its always paid off in the end. My one exception is once its 0C or less- I take a thermos of hot water (no flavour/smell to it) and when I'm good and chilled I chug the hot water, pee in the thermos and go back to being a hole in the forest with a gun. :ninja:
That said, if you guys with the cell phones are enjoying your hunt and happy with your level of success then I say go for it. :D

In all fairness I get out a few times a week and aim for "just a hunt", I bring nothing but my recurve and a will to hunt. Not every hunt involves a phone, and when I say that I communicate, it may be one or two quick emails that say "I will be in contact after lunch" in a 3-4 hour spread. My phone doesn't ring or vibrate, I will glance down at it occasionally to see if I missed anything, and if I did then it waits until I can afford the 10 seconds it takes to notify a client.
Could you afford to hunt every day without working? I sure know I couldn't. I would rather hunt than work, but life doesn't work like that.
I have my nature time like everyone else, but I also like to sneak out and slip in a hunt, but the family has to be fed and the mortgage has to be paid.
As I said, if I only got out a few times a week I would not bring my ability to email. And I do that more often than most people I know.
If you woke up in the morning and had to choose between going to work or going hunting with a phone what would you do? I don't think my decision was bizarre at all.

You need to believe in the stand you are hunting 100%, your focus and adrenalin will take over. Don't make it work, enjoy your time and pick your days. Other than that, I love them squirrels.

I think the disconnect is with the guys who's hunt entails a week or two off work to HUNT. I get that, and don't bring my toys when I go for my two week gun hunt in Nov.......BUT: I live a 10 minute walk from where I bowhunt...and I bow hunt a LOT. :)

For me bringing the iPhone means that I CAN leave the house/office to hunt, but still get a paycheque at the end of the month. Without it I'd be chained to a computer at a desk rather than out in the field.

Call it bizzare if you'd like, but I work full time, only get two weeks holidays, but spend an average of 60 days a year hunting....can you say the same?

I always have my Blackberry on me... YES I do surf the web on occasion, normally to try to figure out what that bug or animal was that just crawled on me... (yest year late season turkey-- black widow spider.)

my phone is on silent, and if i need help i can call a friend, if i dont come home, the authorities can track me better.

ive also used it as a portable regulations book to point out the regs to the lesser knowlegable people out there..(someone using bb shot for turkey)

that said, 80-90% of the time, the phone is in a pocket and my eyes are watching my surroundings

Frankly, I'm too much 'in' to hunting, to use anything, even a book, while on watch.
I try to be totally in tune with my surroundings, and as absolutely motionless, and soundless as possible.

But then sometimes a guy has just gotta fart. :D
