How do you measure your perfect length of pull?

Not really a set formula.

Very roughly...if you shoot right handed...

bend your right elbow 90 degrees...
extend your trigger finger straight and then bend it 90 degrees at the second joint
measure from the inside of your arm above your elbow to the bend trigger finger

that is a starting measure for a rifle for a lot of people ... can you comfortably grip the rifle with your elbow bent 90 degrees with the butt stock against your bicep? You should be able to do that.

It will depend on how much you hold the rifle across your body compared to holding it away a bit more, if you have a jacket on or not can easily make an inch difference. You are better off with a stock a bit short than too long.

Trap shotguns are usually shot with a longer stock.

i found it to be trial and error. i'm most comforable at 13.25. to 13. i also have some at 13.75 a 375 i prefer to have a little clearance from the scope on that one. go to your local store and try a few out. rem 7 is shorter than a rem700. see what feels best. if your going to hunt with it wear a jacket like you would if you were in the cold.

Guntech is correct: there isn't a pat formula. Try this: put on the heaviest jacket you are likely to wear when using that gun and mount the gun as you would when hunting - in the standing position. The thumb of your trigger hand should be about 1" forward of your nose. Less than that and you risk your nose but much more than an inch will hamper you when shouldering the gun - especially if you have heavy clothes on. That set up should also work if you have to shoot prone, sitting or kneeling. Once the length of pull is correct, adjust the position and focus of your scope for the resulting eye relief and you are good to go.
