What do you guys use to remove that hard black carbon that builds up on the inside of your muzzle brake? Looking for some kind of solvent that won't take the paint off my gun. Currently I chip it off with a screwdriver. There's got to be a better way. Haven't tried brake cleaner as I'm afraid it will strip the paint or blueing off my guns. Any Tips?

You're at much greater risk of damaging the finish with your screwdriver than you are with a solvent. STOP USING IT! ! ! !

Brake cleaner won't hurt bluing or parkerizing. It also won't hurt MOST paints. And gun coatings are a lot tougher than most paints.

If your barrel and flash hider or brake are finished in blue or parked then just oil it after using any sort of degreasing solvent. Or use the easy to mix up and use Ed's Red cleaner and a stiff toothbrush and then wipe it off. The ATF left behind after the solvents in the Ed's Red evaporate is enough oil for rust protection.

As odd as this may sound, really strong ammonia solution removes carbon like crazy.

I am currently using janitorial grade ammonia... use outside, super strong.... works great.

Next up would be something like Barnes CR10.

Or top engine cleaner from auto parts supply... or similar product to remove carbon in the heads of engines. Some can be real nasty on paint but if you are using a swab to soak, risk to paint is low.

The best is to push a rag through the brake after every firing to keep the build up low.

I soak things in "Ed's Red" to loosen/remove carbon. Works great in my M-305 gas piston and associated parts. Soak overnight and scrub with a brass brush the next day.
