Good evening all. I am in the process of planning a build for a purpose built gun room and wanted to know what everyone uses for storing their ammo shelf wise. Or do you use shelves? I have stackable ammo crates which I love and perhaps they are the best but when what you need is at the bottom of a stack of 10-15 crates.. well you get the idea.

Any ideas you have used and why you like them would be great. Pictures are greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Filing cabinet 4 drawer style.
Have a nice old one from the time stuff was build to last so no issues with the ammo weight or anything.
Not really shelves like you asked but for sure worth to consider.

I use a couple of these. They are all metal, can be hung on a wall, but stack well as well. I could fit close to 800-1000 rounds in factory boxes per shelf. Infact if I used the whole shelf, probably 1400 rounds in 20 round boxes, and thats 30-06 type stuff. Lockable, adjustable shelves etc. Ammo cans fit in them easily. When on special these small ones come up a few times a year for about 100$ a unit. they have larger ones, but with the weight etc, I like the small ones.

For all of my loose box ammo, like hunting/rifle ammo I use a 10 gun stack on cabinet that I custom built some 3/4" plywood shelves in. For all my bulk ammo in ammo cans I have a locked cupboard underneath the work bench I built for myself which houses about 10-15k rounds of various ammo.

If you're looking for shelving and have the means, build some shelves yourself as they'll be 100 times stronger and far more cost effective than any store bought junk.

In a separate place, in military style ammo cans. The difference is each can is labelled on the hasp end, and keyed to a spreadsheet.

I use ammo cans because the military has been using them for decades.

I'm not that in depth; however I use ammo cans as well. One for each caliber.

Just three?

For reloaded shotgun ammo :)
More for other types and components. 9 total in that room
3 different ones below. Powder stored outdoors in it's own special area and guns again else ware in their own safes
2 of the 9 have vintage wads in them which cannot be bought any more mainly for 16ga reloading, old activs etc a few with extra loading machines etc
Cheers

The spreadsheet was created for couple of reasons.

First, the lesson from High River the Gravel Road Cops is the authorities aren't phased about seizing everyones' guns and their ammunition. I don't know how careful they were hauling stuff out of peoples' houses, but unless an owner could identify their particular ammunition, I wouldn't be surprised that it went to the incinerator. How does a citizen claim damages without proof? So, have a list of what's yours.

Secondly, buy cheap stack deep is not just a slogan. It is easy to forget what is in the locker. Harder to find what you want sometimes too. So, labels and tags make it easier to keep track of what is what. I have realized some types were very abundant when I thought I was short, and vice versa.
