What is the process... What happens when a new rifle comes out in the market... Can it slide in to Canada with out getting noticed! I would like to understand how this works! Thanks

Goes to the RCMP firearms lab. They examine it, and based on that examination gets classified as non-restricted, restricted or prohibited.

If it is a variant of a named prohib, full auto, converted from full auto, or easily converted to full auto, it will be classified as prohib.

If it isn't any of that, it will be restricted or non-restricted based on its overall length, barrel length etc depending on action type. (Semi vs manual).

If it is a variant of a named restricted, like the AR15 or AR10, it will be restricted.

They roll two dices. If they get two 1, it's non-restricted. If theyr get between 2 and 4, it's restricted. If they get all other number it's prohibited. If they get two 1s, they have a second try.

Yes that is all technically true, but let's not forget that the basis for selecting all those criteria (18.5" barrel length, overall length, semi and full auto action, and of course the classification by name/type/variant) is completely arbitrary, non-scientific and meaningless. They literally looked at a gun magazine and picked what looked scary, based on Hollywood movies and ignorant stereotypes.

The way the law was drafted, with no common sense, is true. However the way that a gun is classified under the law is how I stated. I just didn't spell out the differences in semi autos and manuals specifically.

lol , better than that for each 10 gun they check , they prohib/restrict 9 and 1 non restrited and after that they ban a new one that was non-rest

I seriously wonder if it is a bunch of Public Service employees who the week before were working a clerical job in another government agency and who have no experience with any firearms before landing their job at the CFC who now open up a Jane's Book of Guns and then flip through it and go "ooh, ahh, I remember this one from a movie and everyone died. Therefore this gun is bad. Mmmm, never seen this one before, it's brown wood so it doesn't look evil like the black one.....so we'll okay this one....this one has that long thingamajigger where all those bullets go...must kill a lot of people...definitely a no no...." Sigh....someone please tell me this is not the case....

I see this response quite a bit. Is there any real basis for this, or is it just an assumption because that's what it seems like?
