how does an sks surplus rifle work?

Lets chamber a live round in a gun that's KNOWN to slam fire, and unknown how to unload. Maybe should have tested it or played with it unloaded. IQ of 135, yet my avg IQ knows that's a stupid idea.
 
I've done it before too where I loaded an SKS in my backyard with it pointed at the ground. Now today I use snap caps instead but back then it was my second rifle my first being a .22LR and I didn't know snap caps existed. If the gun were to go off at least it was pointed at the ground and not at someones home. Worst I could do it shoot like a septic tank or some ####. Like you, you also went to what was at least the safest place so if the gun fired, you might of shot your septic tank or some ####.

Of course i did a function check after reassembling the gun which was to be finished off by function testing and finally firing at a range. In lieu of of an available range i just chose to function test loading it and manually unloading it as the final test i could do before the firing range.
Wouldnt i look fukking stupid if i attempted to load my rifle at the range for the first time and then figured out the new magazine doesnt work properly or my gun jams. 2 hr drive to the range wasted![

Im shocked and appalled at the JUDGINESS of half the responders. They must be perfect like Jesus!
all i was asking for was normal functions of this rifle with and without a loaded or unloaded aftermarket banana mag in it.
I wonder how many of my detractors even have any experience with a stock SKS, let alone a modded one with aftermarket clip? Im betting close to none.

it seems we have some closet LIBERALS in here who mustve voted justin trudeau, no doubt they love justin bieber too

Your original post made it sound like you didn't have a clue how it was supposed to work. Doesn't matter that you have 40 yrs of experience, if you have no experience on a platform, you get the experience before doing something that can have fatal results, then post it on an open forum. I could say that if you are so experienced then you should have known better. You talk about trying to keep our gun rights alive in this country, well posting stuff like this is doing our cause no favors. We have to denounce it, to not show that this is the norm. The anti's will jump on your posting an incompetent and potentially illegal handling of a firearm, and even more so if no one on the group censures that unsafe action. With as you claim 40 yrs experience it is even more so. You should know better. I thought you might have been a newb, but it is even worse that you are a long time gun owner.

Also it is not Judginess. If you do something at a range that is unsafe or potentially illegal, the RO is going to say something and you are going to hear it. Why would you expect any less here.

Loading guns in your basement when you never used them before? Risky, Not to mention how its going to feel when you blow your ear drums out. Anyways....

Their is a mag release that should drop free your magazine, remember to bolt ALWAYS has to be open to put the magazine in. If your bolt wont pull back you have a problem.

Just to let you know, You can drop your firing pin by simply smashing you guns butstock on the ground. It doesn't even have to be hard just a simple slip on the firearm. Ask me how I know?

Because you've seen it happen at the range I assume :) Same way as you can take SVT bolt from the bolt catch by tapping the stock against your own body :)

On the other hand, OP, just like people said, if you are not familiar with certain firearm - youbute is your friend. If you are not familiar with computers - range is your friend. You WILL find people how have knowladge about your firearm. Well, 95% of the time you will. Guys at my local range are more than willing to spend an hour with new person just to explain to them how firearm operates and teach them about major issues they might encounter. So 2 hour drive in order to learn how your firearm functions is not a waste of time in my books.

You probably saw it happened at the range :) Just like SVT bolt closing after slight tap on a stock :)

OP - just like other people said. If you are not familiar with certain type of a firearm you can do 2 things.
1. Youtube. Watch anything and everything about said firearm.
2. Range. It's not a waste of 2 hours. Go there and you will most likely find people who have same kind of firearm. Guys at my local range are always more than willing to spend time and tell people how things work and what you should do to troubleshoot or what you should avoid doing. If you are in GTA, go to Silverdale. One of their RO's is friends with a gunsmith who does custom work on SKS rifles. I spent good hour just chatting with the man last winter. One of younger guys with a beard.

"I don't want to look stupid at the range, so bc of my insecurity I'm going to mod an sks (fail), load live rounds in my basement (fail), then ask for help because I'm too stupid to learn the function of a simple rifle before I mess with it (fail). Then, to seek help from my betters I'm going to post on a forum about how I just committed a crime (fail), and when people criticize me, I'll just tell them how good I am with firearms (fail), and that I'm smarter than they are (fail). Also, you guys probably haven't even touched one o' these here SKS rifles, durrrrr (fail)."

Can you imagine if the firing pin was stuck in rust or cosmoline and as he loads his firearm indoor, and go full auto slam firing all over the place... Exploding your ear drums and have tinnitus 24/7 and hearing problems for the rest of your life. Some people should not own firearms.

Perhaps it was a lapse of judgement on your behalf to use a live round, but I'm sure you thought it would be fine. And as for individuals judging you harshly for what you did, it happens way too many times on this site. People will ask for an honest opinion and some help, only to be shredded by individuals who can do no wrong. People need to live and learn and sometimes, in hindsight, people come to understand where they have erred. I hope you will not judge all of us by the actions of some. Also realize that sometimes, Jack Daniels is at the keyboard.

Two summers ago I was out in the field zeroing an SKS. No one around for a long way, safe back stop etc. etc. etc.

Shot off many rounds, everything was fine.

Then I loaded another 5 off of a stripper clip, pulled the bolt back to chamber a round and let it go. Rifle went off, finger was no where near the trigger & safety was engaged.

I immediately unloaded the gun and took it apart. Firing pin was NOT stuck. Knew it wasn't cuz I keep my stuff in proper order but when that happens you have to investigate.

Totally freak thing, no clear answer, never happened since.

THAT is why you DO NOT test in your home with LIVE ammo.
 
I think most of us know why and most of us would never do it. My point was, I think op has come to realize his error and I see no point for such harsh criticism for what was obviously an honest mistake that he will, most likely, not repeat. He was just asking for some information, and I don't think there was any need to respond as some members did. Point out the mistake, but don't go to hell with it.

Sadly, I don't think this is true...

Looking at his response, he actually tried to JUSTIFY what he did as being the right thing to do, he also used the "I have been using firearms for xx years so I don't need to follow safety rules" line, he claimed that somehow his high IQ makes everything around him bulletproof and he expressed doubt that the people telling him what a big mistake it was knew anything about an SKS.

He has learned NOTHING, does not think that what he did was a mistake and sees no reason not to do it again... sadly...

What ? I didn't think relaying my experience was being harsh at all.

I'm glad it happened to me and my rifle in a safe setting vs the OP in his home in a unsafe setting.

Just gave an example of how it can easily go wrong.
