How does one restore "nickel plating"

Does anyone know how to restore the plating for a nickel barrel? I have some minor pitting that I would like to remove.

I am guessing here, but I don't see any other way... I think you will have to have all the nickle removed, then polish the metal down to remove pits and prepare the surface, and then have it all nickled again.
