How does one use this type of sight?

John Y, you sure have it right.
I have two or three front sight insert kits around. Some have a post you can put in, as well as a post with a bead on top. For hunting I like the post best.
The kits usually include maybe three different sized peeps for the front.
I also have the adjustable insert for the rear peep. I think it is a Lyman, and it has a black, rubber type outer ring. When you turn the ring, the peep goes from very small to quite large. My back sight was far enough back that for off hand target shooting I could rest my eye brow on the rubbery ring. Made for a reall solid hold.
If anyone wants to see the adjustable aperature, I could post a picture.
