Hey CGN,
Just some thoughts I have been thinking over...
I have read on here and other forums that many believe 1:10 twist .308/7.62 barrels "do not like/shoot 150gr ammo well", especially with "shorter" barrels, ie. ones under 20"...basically it is not worth a damn...I find this to be incorrect.
---
I know that "M80 ball " surplus, pretty much regardless of who makes it has its bullet weighing from 145gr-155gr...and most military "battle rifles" have an 16-18" barrel with a 1:10 twist rate...they've never had a problem shooting M80 ammo as far as I know.
The other factor here that I think some are missing is that most ammo in this projectile weight range IS surplus ammo...ie. it is not bad ammo but it is cheap and def not match grade, most of it only being 2-4 MOA anyways...most guns firing M80 ball should still be minute of man to at least 500 meters...more then good enough and farther then most people can actually shoot!!! (I've seen what most peoples groups look like at my 300 yard range, if they even shoot that far!!!)
...so OF COURSE your Federal 168/175gr stuff is gonna shoot better but you are also paying 3x as much for it...THIS is why/how I think that many think the 18" barrel rifles with a 1:10 twist shoot the lighter stuff "poorly".
---
Just wondering how your .308 Stag 10s (provided you are using the stock 18" barrel or another one with a 1:10 twist rate) shoots ammo from 145gr-155gr weight. Some REAL shooting would be ideal to share...ie. if you've shot paper from a decent rest with optics at a known distance...not what your informal gravel pit shooting 2L bottles with irons at 45 yards off hand went!!!
Personally my Stag has about 700 or so rounds through it...ALL ammo of 145gr-150gr weight, some very cheap stuff too (Barnual and Aguila) and it all shoots within 3.5" at 100 meters with my "meh" shooting skills, with my scoped and the (very) ####ty stock trigger. More then good enough for (again) CHEAP ammo IMO.
Thanks for reading and sharing!!!
