I've got a weatherby Mark V in 300 weatherby. I'm about to start playing with it again and was wondering what type of accuracy others have been getting with theirs . A few years ago I shot with this rifle but found the accuracy lack luster so I shelved the gun. My reloading skills have improved since then so I thought I'd take another crack at it. She'll be wearing a fresh new scope as well.
The barrel is thin so I know that 5 shot groups are out but what have you fellas achieved with 3 shot groups at 200 plus yards and what type of load and bullet combinations work best.

Thanks for you input in advance:)

My hope is that this will be a 500 yd capable hunting rifle.

Both of my Mark Vs were a huge disappointment as far as accuracy is concerned.Neither would consistently shoot MOA even after extensive load development. As a result,I sold one and rebarrelled the other before eventually selling it.

My older German MK V 300 shoots about 1 1/2" at 100 yards. My new matt/synthetic shoots patterns...about modified choke.

Expect about 1 1/2" groups as average for a MK V. This has been their well founded reputation for many years.:puke:

My German made Mk V in 300 will shoot 1.25 with 200 gr handloads, about the best I've ever managed out of it. It's certainly minute of elk/moose, so I can live with it. My 340 (built on a Rem 700) shoots little clover leaf groups, so I don't think it's the cartridge design or freebore. FWIW - dan

My .257 will beat MOA for 5 shots, but with very few loads. I had to work for that. Shooting 3 shot groups most anything would shoot at or just over an inch.Bad loads went 1 1/2". Scattered throughout are a few non repeatable "one-holers". All round I'd put the accuracy at "OK" but not great. Plenty good enough though.

Both my 378 and 338/378 were very accurate. Both averaged 3/4" for three shots. The 338/378 did this with 210 TSXs at 3450 fps. Both were USA built guns. I'd buy another USA biult one in a heartbeat.

If you just want to test accuracy(not a hunting load)drop in 85 grs. 7828 behind a 180 Hornady. If it doesn't shoot this don't worry its still a good spear/jack handle.

After rebarrelling(without the freebore) and bedding my MarkV in 257 wby,it became a sub 1/2 MOA shooter,so the cartridges can certainly be accurate. However when you pay the price for a Mark V you shouldn't need to spend extra money making the rifle shoot.
