How far can I go

Hey, I've been reading this section and have grown an interest in seeing what my gun is capable of. This is a unique situation because I'm just a curious hunter who loves his hunting rifle, and wants to test it.
I'm shooting a tikka t3 lite blued barrel, synthetic stock in .30-06
I shoot 150 grain Remington core lokt bullets and get under 1" groups at 100 yards.
Ya I know this isn't a target setup by no means, but I don't have the money to get into reloading.
Btw for glass I have a Leupold VX-II 3-9x 40mm
Thanks to all who give opinions

I'm asking how far would be a reasonable distance that I could expect hits on a 11"x11" target.
The farthest I've practiced was 100 yards, but have shot deer at further

Just hits on targets or are you hoping to take animals at those distances? big difference

a T3 lite in -06 shooting factory ammo... an 11x11 target... i would say inside of 400yrds that paper is in for a world of hurt but the rifle and cartridge are capable of alot more then that. this question is best answerd by you on a calm day on a long stretch of cutline... let us know how you make out.

I'm gonna take a chance and guess 450 yards. I can't wait for you to come back and tell us the answer. This is all getting very exciting. :)

If you were to take your rifle to a range and set up at 500 yards and spend some time getting your elevation and windage dialed in, I would think that you'd be able to hit your 11"x11" target the great majority of the time. (Say, at least eight out of ten shots). So, while not "I can ethically shoot a moose at 500 yards", but definitely "wow, I can hit the target nearly every time and damn this is fun!". Is that what you were looking for?

If you were to go to an 800yard or 1000 yard range as the guest of an experienced long range shooter, he could probably spot your shots for you and talk you onto the target within 15 rounds or so, after which you'd probably be able to hit a 6'x6' target board the vast majority of the time, and hit the 4' diameter aiming black more than half the time.

If you really want to find out, get into handloading and put in some 155gr Amax bullets (closest to what you are using now and I know these fly far just fine). You want a sub MOA load with as little vertical dispersion as possible (1/2 min or less and yes, it will be possible).

Proper bedding can help here tremdously.

Assuming ambient conditions are calm, you should have no issue hitting such a target at 1000yds. Missing would be a function of ambient conditions NOT being as calm as we would all like and your ability to be consistent.

Don't want to be rude but most rifles outshoot their owners.

As to how far you can shoot this rifle, I have pushed a 308 to 1450yds with the 155gr Amax and out to 1800yds from a Wby. Ran out of up or I would/could have gone further. Pushed a 223 to a mile with excellent accuracy - that was a goofy scope setup.

If you can get enough UP in your scope, distance is not an issue. These bullets will fly as far as you have real estate to let you.

Doping conditions that far, whole other story......but it is a lot of fun...

Plinking at rocks is one thing, hunting at LR is another. Lots more info on my website.

Remember to limit your shooting to only a few rds before letting the barrel cool.

you'll get far better accuracy with quality ammo especially for longer ranges... buy a box of Fed Gold Medal match 175 gr or Fed Premium 175's and your groups will shrink...

Thanks folks. In Manitoba it's about -40 right now so it'll be a while till i get out and try this, but when i do, i will post my results.
Might try out those Federal ammo, not sure.

I have taken my "off the shelf" Mod 70 .270 Win to 900m (controlled military range / reactive targets, prone and sandbagged) & have a new found appreciation for the level of equipment and technique required for distance. I learned in no uncertain terms that a 1MOA group @ 100 won't always equate to 2" @ 200, 4" @ 400 (etc). Point being, a hunting rifle will launch any bullet farther than you will ever need, but there are to many variables in effect that can spoil your shot, or worse, wound a critter - even at 500 yards. I don't profess to, or make any claim to being a long range authority, and am happy that mysticplayer took any interest in this thread. If you take any long range advice, he's the man!

What a bunch of underachievers.

We used to shoot a bone stock Mod 70 30-06 out to 1000 yds in sniper competition with a 10x scope.

Stretch your expectations and you'd be amazed what the average rifle can achieve.

Yes, but I think you practiced to get there. My under achievement is due to lack of practice. :D

Hows the bike going btw?

Go 300 then once your comfortable at 300 then go 400,500.... At 300 your bullets will still be on the target, 400 you will need to add elevation and wind starts to become a factor. Good luck.

I was really refering to the guys who say an 06 is only good out to 400 or 500 yds.

The bike is OK, it is me who is worn out and broken. :(

I don't think the limitation here is the cartridge that people are referring to, it's the fact that he has a 9x hunting scope and trying to spot an 11" target at anything further is going to require more magnification.
