we don't need to practice cause we did that years ago and all was good then:D

You jest, but almost everyone I know has the same attitude. Most don't shoot at all before the season, or only a few shots, unless I start making fun of them in public...:)

I know a couple guys that didn't hunt for 5 years, then went deer hunting. Couldn't figure out why they were missing deer at 40 yds, cuz the rifle was sighted in 5 years ago...

:D
I own 3 gun safes full of rifles for any game from ruffed grouse to deer, moose, wild boar..........no African or Alaskan forays yet but they're on the pricedo "to do" list.

Pennsylvania wild boar hunt coming up this fall.

For wild boar I sight my Ruger Model 96/44 in .44 Rem. Mag. to "0" @ 100 yards.

My "stand" .300 Win. Mag - a T/C Icon with a 2.5-16x40mm Bushnell Elite 6500 mounted on it that I use for tree stand hunting moose in the extensive logging clear cuts in Northern Ontario where 400 yd. or greater distance shots are common place is sighted in to "0" @ 200 yards.

My "trail carry" .300 Win. Mag - a Ruger Model 77 Stainless with a Leupold 3-9x40 mounted on it is sighted in to "0" @ 100 yards.

My Savage Weather Warrior Model 116 FCSS (Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40mm scope) in .30-06 Spring. & my various .308 Win. rifles (various medium & high end Bushnell & Leupold scopes) are sighted in to "0" @ 100 yards.

My DA Grizzly shotgun (iron sights) is sighted in for Winchester 1 oz. "1700 fps" rifled slugs @ 25 yards.

Our range goes to 200yds. I'd like to be able to shoot to 400.

We are not allowed to shoot off range out of season.

.

:D

We are not allowed to shoot off range out of season.

I'm predicting that little tid bit will likely be included in the new Ontario version of Quebec Bill 9 "The Anastasia Law" that is apparently in the drafting/finalizing stage now. Wendy & the relevant Ontario Ministers & Senior Bureaucrats are probably in a huddle working out & piecing together the fine details now as I type this post.

No more packin iron for "plinking" in the bush or target shooting in gravel pits etc. .........all shooting of non-restricted firearms will be done at a range in the "off seasons" with a mandatory buddy:kickInTheNuts: present at all times of course.

The CFO-Ontario will use/abuse:mad: his "discretionary powers" to in fact (wrap your mind around this one) :runaway:restrict non-restricted firearms !:runaway:

This highly questionable action could possibly (& should) be challenged in court as an encroachment on exclusive federal legislative powers but just like with Quebecs Bill 9 ..... it won't be.

There will be lots of crowing, strutting, big talk, posturing on this board and the tempest in the tea pot will boil furiously for a day or two but after all is said & nothing is done the usual surrender & almost unanimous compliance.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong on this one...........but I don't think so.:(

Another of my BUG-EYED PARANOID predictions coming true.

Back on topic...

For me:

50 yard sight in on paper.

100 yard gong if it is set up or a Deer shaped target we have at the range or a large cardbord box I drag to the range as a target stand. 30/30 Winchester.

200 and 300 yards gongs for the other rifles we have.

I feel no need to practice beyond that at this time as I won't take a shot at a game animal beyond 300 yards anyway, especially given the nature of our hunting environment here on Vancouver Island.

My local range only lets me practice out to 400 yards, so that's as far as I practice. I'd practice to 500 if my range was a bit longer. Not really sure why I bother, now that I think of it...everything I shoot seems to be around 100 yards.

I zero at 100. Practice freehand anywhere from 10 to 100. Shoot 300 for fun sometimes. Where I hunt 90% of shots are under 100. Long shots are few and far between. Although I do have the room to practice anywhere out to 800 if I so desired.

I test/build up loads from 100 to 200, then make sure thay work at 300 to 400. I shoot a lot at 300 with my centrefires.

Pistols I am stuck 20 and under in the winter (indoor)...... in the summer I will shoot out to 100yrds with my pistols, but usually 25yrds ish

So I practice at all ranges from 0 to 400.

B.C Coast Mountains Hunter here. I've never shot anything out of 50m. I use my Hawkin 54 cal black powder rifle. I practice speed loading ball and patch standing at 75m...anyone who shoots at a critter past 200m...needs to be "knee capped" and left in the woods to crawl back to their fancy ass trucks with chrome and s**t. :D I consider it unethical

I test my loads, and practice at at 100yards. Most every deer I have shot was well under 100yards where I hunt. Most are at 40 - 50 yards.

As for practicing off hand, my range does not allow it :( but I try to get some practice in at my buddies farm at around 50 - 70 yards. I'd love to be able to practice much more off hand.

My range maxes at 200yards, so I like to try 200 once in a while, even though I will never shoot that far.

I sight in for 200 and practice to 400 and will take an animal if need be. I've taken a couple @ 440 yds one shot each. But that all said I love to get in close and get them in spitting range. Its just more fun to actually "hunt" an animal than take them as target practice :). I also bow hunt and practice to 60 yds. :)

400yds

I started using my Monarch with the bullet drop compensator. It's supposed to work up to 600 yds, and I've proven it with a couple of loads to 400. My Antelope was shot at 256yds according to my rangefinder, and dropped on the spot. There was NO way I was getting closer, and this was after a cactus infested crawl of about 250yds. Most of my shots are at or under 150 yds, but when pushed I feel confident up to 400+ for now, and with more practice I know I can extend even that.
I reload and shoot upwards of 2500 - 3000 rounds combined in three big game rifles each year, so my ability to make clean kills at distance is a KNOWN factor, not just hail mary kind of shots. I still get as close as I can for each hunting shot since to me, that is part of the hunt.

I have only 230 yards available at our local range right now, but I have a friend living in farm country that lets me shoot out farther on his property. I set up targets at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 600 yards. My rifles are all sighted in the same - between 3 & 3½" high at 100. With my Norma Mag, that puts me just about dead on POA at 300, and only about 2 feet low at 500. 600 sees it down 46" My 270 with the 140 Accubond is down 27" at 500 and 51 or so at 600. The 300 WSM's trajectory is, for all practical purposes, identical to the 270. Generally, I will not shoot if I cannot keep my shots on a 9" paper plate using field positions. Three shot groups at 600 yards will generally stay inside 6" if I do my part. Lots of practice helps. And if the shot is "iffy" in any way, I am quite willing to pass it up. If conditions are right and I have a good, steady rest, or can shoot prone, I will take a 500 yard shot with confidence. [Did I mention lots of parctice?] Regards, Eagleye.

400 yards for hunting ammo a month before the season

all spring/early to mid summer I usually am loading a target bullet of some sort, and shoot 600 to 750 yards for fun

I've shot out to 800 yards for fun, I zero at 100 yards. I try to get a bit of practise at 200 yards, but the 200 yard at my range is closed when the shotgun folks are out doing anti-birdie practise. At my current skill level I wouldn't make a shot that counted past 200 yards. Just plain wouldn't be confident in making a clean kill so I'd have to sneak myself closer.

My range is up to 200+ yards but since I am using iron sights (M1 Garand) I zero in at 100, mostly free standing, since that is the easiest way to shoot that rifle (for me, anyways)

I consider it unethical:confused:

It takes a good man to be honest with himself............congrats.:)

Like Dirty Harry Callaghan said ......."A man's got to know his limitations."

You've got to shoot within the limitations of yourself & your firearm.

Most wounded animals crawled away to die an agonizing death because a hunter over estimated his/her abilities.

If 50m:rolleyes: is you're limit then stick with it...........I doubt if they allow you to own guns in most Old Age nursing homes anyway.........time to pass that Hawken down to your grandson. ;)
