How far down should I neck size 45-90

Bought myseld a Lyman 45 Cal Short Neck Size Die.
How far down the case should I neck size?

I'm assuming its length of the bullet from crimping groove to base????

What if its more?

I would say that you are right but a bit past shouldn't hurt anything.

In my opinion only far enough to hold the bullet firmly. Some people after fire forming don't rersize or necksize anything.
I resize enough to hold the bullet firmly. 1/4 inch or so.

Depends on whether you are shooting a single shot or lever with tube mag.

I have the same die, for use in a single-shot, and size it "just enough", so that it chambers easily and grips the bullet satisfactorily. There are many permutations of how that can be done, and I'm still experimenting.

If you use low pressure loads (e.g. 20K psi and less) just crimping might work. I've even used a 45 Colt die to size the upper 1/2 inch and that worked well too.

Well I neck sized it about 1/2 inch which is the same length as the base to the crimping groove. Then I opened the neck just enough to set the bullet.
I used my 45-70 competition seater, added an additional locking ring and set it to the same depth used my other die to crimp.

Now I have a bullet bulge, a narrowing then the gradual case taper. The cartridge still chambers but feels and looks stupid.
I doubt it will be consistent, accuracy wise.

Think I will neck size only a 1/8 to 1/4" and see what happens.
