Perhaps but the TR guys don't use long barrels for no reason. If they could keep their palma bullet super sonic at 1000 with a 24" barrel for example, I'm sure they would. Anyway I'm open to challenging norms so I'll look into it.

Well, the TR guys will extend the barrel as far as they can and still make weight just for the sight radius.
I don't have a bunch of experience with it, but if I were trying >800 with an M14, I would look at 175 SMK and a Shuster gas plug.
800 meters here at Connaught. I tried it is a precision rifle match in 2008. I was key holing with 168 BTHPs but hitting the fig 11/12s. I was there more to find the limits of my rifle and myself. Very revealing. In combat, the hits are acceptable. I would never go that far for a clean hunting kill.
Very good point about the sight radius. Yes my next step is the 175 SMK. What is a Shuster gas plug?
Have shot M14 type rifles out to 600 meters at General Vokes Range.
Depending on what you have done to them, they can do very well at long distances..........BUT that requires a boatload of money and a lot of time invested in tuning/tweaking..........
