How Far Off Lands ???

every gun is different. I found the worked best just touching, but many report they work well jumped 20 thou. Id start at the lands and work back in 5 thou increments.

For hunting, I keep bullets at least .010 off the lands so they don'tt get stuck in the rifling and dump the powder charge in the action when the case is extracted. For target shooting I do as above and start at the lands and move out, for what its worth most of my guns have shot best just off the lands.

This SMK has a tangent ogive so it should be easy to find a good COAL.
  • Unless you're willing to deal with bullet stuck in the barrel when unloading a cartridge, the minimum practical distance is 0.020-0.030" off the lands.
  • You can get top accuracy even with 0.120" off the lands.
  • If you want to feed cartridges from a magazine, the magazine oftens limits COAL.

So if it feeds from the magazine 0.030", 0.060", 0.090" and 0.120" off the lands are good first guesses.
Once you've found most accurate range, you can try 0.10" shorter and longer to see if it makes a difference.

"A good place to begin (and frankly to stay unless you're already at the Master level in NRA Highpower) is to jump 0.020" for conventional tangent ogive type bullets such as the Sierra MatchKing line or Berger's new designs and to jam 0.015" for VLD type bullets such as Berger VLD, Hornady AMAX, JLK VLD, and others of the secant ogive design.

There are slight variations in any lot of bullets, so when you check your finished rounds you will see some variance in the COAL - don't worry about it too much. The reason we selected the jump and jam figures given is because they allow for some slight variance and still maintain the basic concept of jump or jam. If you were to set the jump for 0.003" for instance, then a slight variance might have some bullets jumping, some right on the lands, and some actually jammed a few thousandths. By sticking to 0.020" jump or 0.015" jam, those same slight variances will have minimal effect - imperceptible for the Highpower shooter anyway."
