Hey fellas, I maybe trading for a tikka t3x compact 20" barrel in 204 ruger, I was just wondering how far can this round kill coyotes? I have a late 70's Winchester Model 70 in 22-250 with a medium weight barrel, I can knock them down out to almost 300 yds

I have killed coyotes out to 200 hundred yards with my Browning X Bolt 204 it has a 22" barrel. At that distance it is just hold on hair. I have not shot any further than that to date. But I really like my 204.

If you can place the bullet in the vitals at 500 yards, it'll die.
It's pretty flat for 350 yards.

There's a stinky coyote thread in the Hunting section, it shows some pics of 204 Ruger on Yotes.

I don't think I will be taking very long shots with it, just a walking rifle lol, just wondering what the range would be

This one was shot at 220 yards with 35gr Bergers.
In through the front right shoulder, made jello of vitals, no exit.
Yote jump spun around, ran 10 yards and tumbled.

Very small hole. Love the .204!!!

There is a guy on YouTube from southern alberta layed one flat at over 500 yards with a 204. If you can make a good shot at a practical distance he's gonna hit the dirt
Stay with the heavier weight stuff like the 35gr berger 39gr speer or sierra or the 40gr v max. All of the above will get the job done

My personal longest shot that I have I checked with the range finder is 450yds. It was on a big old male that would not come any closer to the call but was standing perfectly side ways and barking at me. I put the 35gr Berger right behind the front leg and he spun around three times and fell on the same spot. I have shot a few more at or just past that range but that is the only one that I had the range finder along and handy that day. The only two bullets I use on coyotes are either the 35 or 40gr Berger, depends on which of my 3 204s I have out that day.

I have killed coyotes out to 350 with .204 bullets out of my 20 practical with bang flop results and judging by the gophers and crows i have hit at 500 i would trust it to drop a coyote at that distance.

I only use 40grain vmax and have shot past 500 yards it will drop coyotes in their tracks if you hit them in the vitals.I have had 220swift's and 22-250's and like the 204 the best it shoots super flat. When the 204 first came out someone did a test on barrel length and a 20inch barrel was fine most of the powder was use up at 20 inches there was very little velocity game after that. The only down side to a 204 is wind if there is wind I will switch to a larger caliber my 6mm-284 all though if it's windy you won't find coyote anyways. At one time I used to shoot over 100 coyotes a year and sell the palts I sure wish I had the 204 then would have been a lot less sawing up the damaged hides

I like the 39 bk it's got a great bc and the plastic tip really helps it open way out there. I am trying the 40 gr berger now. It's bc is ok.

I did try the 35 gr berger. Bc is low. 300 to 400 yards the wind drift was huge over the 39 bk. If u stay under 300 yards it should be fine. I did have one interesting experience with it though. I shot a fox at 410 yards. Hit him in the center of the neck. I was trying for the shoulder but hit the neck, Fox went right down as I hit the spine. The autopsy showed zero expansion. Total ice pick wound right through. If you run the numbers on the low bc berger it's easy to understand why. Muzzle velocity was over 3900.

The 204 is a great little varmint cartridge, but has absolutely no advantage over the Swift at 350+ yards.
At 500, the Swift delivers almost 50% more energy on target, and the drift with the 55 grain bullet is slightly
less than the 204 with a 40 grain.
Don't misinterpret my comments, I love the 204...low recoil, less noise and does not burn a bucketload of powder
when you squeeze one off.
I limit my shots on Coyotes to <400 when packing the 204. Outside of that, the Swift gets the nod....or quite possibly
the 6mm Remington with a 70/75 grain bullet.
Dave.
