How far would you go to save some weight?

Hi gang, was referred back to this post by Pinfire.

I just bought this exact Thomas Turner SxS 12 GA (had the same "6220" sticker on the stock) from InterSurplus. Came in yesterday.

It's been fun reading through the posts in this thread!

Anything you'd recommend I check/do before trying to run some 2.5" challenger 7/8s through it?
(I'm new to the vintage* SxS shotgun world)

I would suggest running hand loads in your vintage guns, there is lots of data and information fir loading both black and low pressure Smokeless loads:cool:

Nice purchase, Baroc, and welcome to the friendliest corner of CGN. Some of us, myself included, are envious. Enjoy what is clearly an interesting and quality gun. A clean of the barrels and a wipe-down of metal parts should be sufficient for now. A tiniest dab of suitable grease on the hinge is a precaution against wear, though I doubt you're planning on putting 10,000 rounds a year through it!

Looking forward to seeing it on display (and in action) at the 8th Annual Upper Canada Double Gun Classic!

Save some weight you say? I'm looking at a 28" barrelled 12 gauge right now that comes in at 5 1/2 pounds. Barrel walls are okay but not a lot of margin for error. Could be a super fun gun though. Still rolling it around in my head.

I’ll echo Pinfire’s encouragement. I know it’s a long way but you might consider joining us on June 1 for the Upper Canada Double Gun Classic. I know that Turner would turn some heads. And I think you might enjoy the exposure to so many different, fine guns that are brought by the other attendees. It’s a great day. Hope to see you.

I was looking at that one myself, and settled on a 6lb Arthur Allan with 28” barrels. Has a 15” pull. Fine shooting little 12ga. Plan to shoot some clay with it. And have a formal English style hunt coming up the end of march.

I kind of like the waxed-canvas cases...

Took it out today, and was very pleased. Quite fun to shoot!
Anyone have recommendations on where I can get a nice case for this Turner, when hauling it around?

I don't know what you had in mind, either style or cost, for the gun. But if new rather than vintage case is what you are thinking about, it used to be that Jeff's Outfitters in the US were the go-to for reasonably priced, well made leather or canvas with leather take down cases. I had bought about 6 from them over the years. They shut down this time last year (owner retired) and a new company has taken up where they left off. Bought their mailing list, using same maker in Mexico and looks pretty good. Next time I need one i will be trying them out. Based in Texas. The last thing I bought from Jeff's was an ammo case and it has fantastic leather...much nicer than their older stuff. I can't confirm it but it looks like the new guys are using this new leather.

Here is their website : https://venatti.net/venatti

You have to call and speak directly to them. Their website is not set uP for international. But they are very happy to take the order. A word of caution. They are going to want to ship FedEx. My experience with FedEx for importing product has not been good. Lots of fees and the shipping isn't cheap either. I was planning to try to convince them to use USPS for Canada. Fast enough, no import fees...simply duty (should be none, made in Mexico) and taxes. YMMV

Thanks for the recommendations, will certainly take a look and explore these.

I was originally looking for a vintage style case, but couldn't find anything reasonably priced, so I'm opening up to the idea of a canvas option. The one Mike posted looks real good.
Venatti's "English Style Compact SxS Canvas Case" is lookin real good too. Awesome recommendations.

hmmmmmmmm

I have bought a couple of the compact cases in the past. The English call them "Toe Under" cases. I won't buy any other version of those take down cases now.
