How fussy do you guys get when neck turning?

My 40XB in 6mm was why I started neck turning.
When a bullet would not enter the case an experienced reloader set me on the right path.
I have even turned 338 Win Mag necks but only cleaned up the neck so the turning showed on 2/3rds to 3/4ers of the neck.
I believe it helps especially when there is a lot of variation from one side to the other.

What is the size of your chamber neck and the size of your neck on a loaded round?

I had a custom made 257 weatherby built in the past with a very tight match chamber. It was so tight that I had to "push" the bolt down. After conducting some research I came across Redding Competition Shell holders. When these shell holders are utilized they went above and beyond SAAMI specs to reduce the size of the case...........short story, problem solved and easy as pie to perform. BTW, it was a Ted Galliard 28" barrel and the gun maker was Rocky Mountain Rifles from Dawson, BC. The gun is a 1/4" shooter.

I have neck turned in 3 different rifles all with no change in performance. I tried just "cleaning up the necks" by turning 3/4 of the material off giving me good neck tension and then completely turning to get 100% uniformity and again with no measurable benefit. I checked velocities, neck tension, run-out and kept charge weights to .05 gr. Never any measurable gains.

Having said all of this, one rifle was a PGW Coyote in 7 WSM where a standard SAMMI spec reamer was used, another a 260 AI(the OPs rifle originally, which was a laser to begin with) where I'm not sure of the reamer and the third rifle was a 6 SLR built on a Peirce Ti action with a custom reamer. None of these rifles are BR or even F class rigs but I would have expected some improvement even a minor one.

I have also reamed necks to clean up donuts with no measurable difference in velocity or accuracy.

So, is there a benefit to neck turning? Well all of the BR and F Class crowd can't be wrong but I think you have to have the right chamber to see the results.

I'm slowly getting away from turning necks, may have two barrels left in 6PPC with the tight neck chambers, anyway if you can turn and have a variation of one thou or less you're good to go I try for 1/2 thou.
Any new chambering is done with NO turn neck dia, I still check necks and may just clean them up a bit.
Enjoy
