How Good Is The ARMS # 18 Mount?????

That's it below, the short one. The other looks awefully like the one above. You copying me Rifledude? :D

I don't know, you tell me. Mine is all USGI except for the receiver, which is Norinco and the barrel which is a Douglas-Barrett heavy target barrel. The cheekpiece is indeed an early Rooster33 type. I've also got a Rooster33 oprod spring guide inside. The gas assembly is shimmed up tight and USGI fibreglass stock is bedded. Hungry measured the headspace at 1.630" which is as tight as I would want it (minimum) for accuracy. This is with the USGI bolt. The Norinco bolt gives me an extra 0.005" headspace which is still good. The bipod is Harris shorty swivel type. As a matter of interest, I canibalized my TRW M14 for parts to built this beauty (I know I'll get flamed for that but it was either that or have safe queen that I couldn't shoot any more  ) She can really shoot too. My smallest 5-shot group is 0.325" It normally groups around 0.75MOA though :dancingbanana:

Ah, mine is just a pretender compared to yours. I have yet to accurize it. It's mostly stock Norinco, except for Rooster cheekpiece and spring guide. Shimming is next. I have the same Harris bipod, though it looks like you have the 10x40 fixed Bushnell scope, while mine is a 3x9x40.

Hungry was also kind enough to measure the headspace average at 6 thou over the spec. Still learning what that all means.

Why is the Smith Ent mount - the weaver one- so cheap compared to the Arms 18 and 1913 rail ones????

The best mount for your money IMHO! It is cheap cause it is only a weaver mount I guess...but if you are only going to mount a scope on it, you don't really need a 1913 rail.

I believe it is the method of machining that was far less expensive with the weaver mount as it didn't need to meet military specs. From all reports that won't make any difference to you as the user, except for saving you money.

Thank you Buckle & Kid!! That is what I was hoping to hear! :dancingbanana: since I just ordered one from them! I will let you all know how the order process goes and of course how the mount turns out! (I ordered their shim kit too, mysticplayer is all out)

Got the mount yesterday :)... so all told it took a month. Granted it was over the holidays and they did say they were waiting for one or several screws before they could ship it.
They charged 15$ USD shipping and -so far- no bill from UPS for customs clearance or #### like that.
Can't wait to try out the mount...

I also bought their shim kit, which unfortunately doesn't quite do it for my gas system... the thinnest is too thin and the next one is too thick. Still the gas lock tightens up way better than before.
cheers

The Military wanted a 1913 Spec. rail over the Weaver rail. The difference is in the spacing of the slots.

This means that soldiers, etc can transfer optics to any 1913 rail system without having to change the ring spacing everytime.

SEI had 50 or 60 of the Weaver mounts originally kicking around and decided to blow them out.IIRC, they did find another box of them while cleaning up.

If you are not going to be swapping optics back and forth bewteen firearms, the Weaver SEI mount is a great bargain.

IMHO, SEI (Smith mount) over the ARMS #18.The ARMS #18 case stoppage problem doesn't happen with all M14s, (mine never had a problem but a coupld of buddies did) but it happens enough for me to deem the ARMS #18 as unreliable IMO.

If you can get the original ARMS #18 that has no middle rail section, then the stoppage problem will not exist. These mounts are VERY hard to find and extremly coveted buy thier owners.;)

FYI, the mount on the M14 in BHD is the original ARMS #18 mount. The Aimpoint was mounted on the front rail section.

SKBY.

Let us know how it works for you please. I'm interested in getting one...

I didn't know that SEI shipped M14 parts to Canada. That is good news. Obviously you had no problem getting yours. Was there US export paperwork involved or are these mounts not regulated like that?

No paperwork for me to fill out, no. The customs declaration said "machined parts" in one section and "scope mount" in another.

I checked and realized they shipped via US postal service, not UPS as claimed by their website, and so -I've been told- there's no customs clearance/ brokerage fees. *Accept this fact at your own risk* I am at a total loss to understand all of the BS redtape involved in shipping a chunk of metal accross a border... and not for a lack of trying.

When I ordered I asked for a total but they couldn't tell me how much shipping would be... so I did not bother asking about customs, Duty, GST on duty etc etc etc.
knock on wood. So far, so good, no invoice for duty, and nothing about customs brokerage fees (which has happened to me before)

As for dealing with SEI, I had no issues. However, they seem to be a very small shop so I don't think it's safe to assume that one man's experience is any indication to the next guy's. From all accounts they make an exceptional product - and from I can see the mount is of a high-grade, quality machining & hardware, down to the 3 allen keys they include.

If you're not in a big rush go for it!

Oh, one thing to add/ correct: I emailed for a quote which is when Ron said "not sure how much to ship, but it shouldn't cost much" (yes I gave my full address)... so when I called to order the lady said "Oh we can't ship that to Canada..." I told her that Ron said it wouldn't be problem and that was that. :) Like I said, small shops, you either love em or hate em - consistency/ repeatable procedures are not always to be expected. ;)

I ordered a Smith Enterprise Weaver Scope Mount and called them last week to see if there was some sort of tracking number to check on line but the guy who answered told me that he couldn't give me one because it was sent via regular mail. The way he sounded on the phone, I think he was just too lazy to check, but to give them the benefit of the doubt there ARE some types of shipping that do not use tracking numbers and the website says that "Online delivery information is not available for all destinations".

As of today, I have not received the scope mount...

...I'll let you know if/when it comes in.

Thanks for the extra info boys. I think I'll try ordering one and see what happens...

I can clear up some of the USPS questions. I believe most if not all of the shipping classes do not offer tracking to Canada. I don't know why but I've never been able to track one. As far as brokerage fees go, I've never been charged by USPS yet. Unlike UPS or Fedex, they seem to include it as part of shipping. Been charged tax by CCRA on packages, but never a broker fee. In short, USPS is the way to go transborder. Sure its slow and untrackable. but it is cheap and everything I've shipped with them has shown up.

I have been charged $5 for clearing the parcels across the border when sent USPS, but it is certainly the best method for shipping across the border. I refuse to order from companies that won't use them.

As for tracking parcels on international shipments, Canada Post can't even give you updated info within Canada. ;)

Well, my Smith Enterprise Weaver-Style scope mount finally arrived...

...I had to pay pst/gst ($22), but that was it.

All together it took 28 days from order to delivery...

...now to go get the rings (Burris Signature Zee) and scope - Bushnell 4200 or Leupold VXII

Oh well,Either way.

Now that I know it's allowed, I may order a few more items from Smith's.

I had a ARM#18 on my Norc. I had the problem with brass getting stuck on ejection. I replaced all of the bolt springs with USGI and this helped.. but it would still get caught up once every 4-5 mags or so. I ended up selling the ARM#18 and going back to open sights.. works EVERY time now ;-)

YMMV
