I am waiting for the paperwork to clear for my rpal, so I have started shopping around for a handgun. I looked at a Ruger P95. Nice looking and felt good in my hand. I like the cost feature of a 9mm (will reload eventually) but I wasnt too sure of the durability, reliability of this. It was also recommended to me to consider the Springfield XD, they didn't have one on hand so I only have the info from the web. I am working in a tight budget so I want to get the best gun for my money (has to be under $700).

Does anyone have one of these, will the trigger, action etc need work??
how well do they shoot?

I had a .357 mag revolver in the past(20 yrs ago) but am in new territory with the semi-autos. Thanks for your input.:confused:
 
For your first semi 9mm, under $700, I'd recommend a Smith and Wesson M&P or a Glock 17. Both are reliable, easy to shoot, and well priced.
 
do some looking for a b grade hk7. they are out and out one of the top pistols out there they have a very slim profil and are insanly acurate as well as a very! good fit in the hand. they can be had used for 550-680
 
M&P would be my first choice in that price range, if a Glock fits your hand properly you can't go wrong there. Also take a look at the CZ-75 in an all steel pistol.
 
In that price range of 9mm pistols, I would look at a Glock G17, SW M&P 9, and a CZ SP-01 in that order. Rugers are built strong but the triggers are not that great (they suck something awful to be honest).
 
I would get a CZ75b from Frontier Taxidermy. (check the sponsors) At 619$ it's a great deal, IMO CZ trigger is by far more pleasant than all other 9mm's of the same price. Try to borrow one before you make a decision.
 
If you have access to a gunclub,ask some of the members if you can try some of their 9mm pistols (make sure you bring your own ammo Factory of course)most members will usually let you try them.If you don't have access ...Glock g-17 lots of parts and stuff available here on the EE for a good price.SW mp -9 adjustable palm grips not to many parts available.

+1 on the M&P, if you're going 9mm. But I'd suggest trying out a few first.

Being as you'll likely need to be a member of a gun club to buy and take home a handgun anyhow, you might as well join up, get to know some members and try out a few to get familiar with the various different options you have.
 
STi has Grand Power making the K100 for them. STI got them to change a few things like the hammer and markings and whatnot. I think the 150 dollar premium over the 549 dollar K100 is a bit steep for a new hammer and STI brand name on the slide...
 
I'd definately go K100 over the MP9 (yes that review and compare/contrast is comming... I just need the planets to align so I can get to the range tomorrow)

At the moment, I seriously regret having bought the MP9 as well as the K100.... hopefully I get ridiculously suprised when I go unload a dozen clips through it

the things so far I dont like about the MP9....

The desearing lever that you have to poke and prod at to field strip the gun. Youre supposed to use the tool that pulls out of the grip, but I havnt been able to pull it out without using a pair of pliers

The fit of the frame seems sloppy, especially where the mounting rail is, it looks like its pulling away from the slide, its not nice and tight (Id say the composite/plastic is warped, but all of them that I've seen look this way)

The grip on the slide shreds my fingers, which no other handgun has done to me

The recoil spring seems unusually strong (its not that Im too weak to use it, but its not going to be the one I let any women use if I go to the range with them)

The magazine is a PITA to load up, where the K100s mags are a cake walk

there is no way to decock the gun, so if I eject the last round and reset the slide to keep the spring good, and then slap the empty mag back in, the gun is cocked

anyway, those are the downsides of it that I've seen while I waited for my long term ATT to show up.... in comparison, the only thing I didnt like about the K100, is I think the release to field strip it, will eventually break, since you are flexing the trigger guard.

and since I left out the reason I am regretting getting the MP9 as well.... Having seen how much better quality the K100 is, and having seen other 9mm options and their quality over the MP9, I think that $650 would have been better spent elsewhere

Seems to be we have a common point of view and that is why I went for the Glock 17. One more thing that I notice that the bottom of the trigger guard keeping rub my middle finger when I handle the gun at the store. Anyhow the price of those plastic gun is well worth the money.

OK, so I have fired a few rounds through the M&P and I'm a little confused by what you've written. The sear release lever can be operated by a key, or your little finger - I wouldn't recomend pulling the tool out just to take the pistol apart. The cosmetics of the rail, what can I say, if it was up to me there wouldn't be a rail on it. As far as the recoil spring goes, it's a little stiffer than some nines, but seems within the normal range, it is however a little harder to handle due to it's captive design, that can be fixed by going with an aftermarket spring and rod. The mag springs are a bear at first, leave them loaded for a couple of weeks (properly secured of course) and they ease out enough to be useable. The design of these pistols, and Glocks (and before the Glock the VP70) are fundamentally different from the more classic "all steel" pistols, they have gaps between the "frame" and slide, they rattle a little and it can appear that there's something wrong, there isn't - take a few hundred rounds to the range and all of the problems disappear.
