How good is WOLF ammo?

Hey everyone,

it's starting to get hard to get my hands on my preferred 9mm loads, American Eagle FMJ 124-gr in the 1000-rd case.

So, I've been thinking about giving WOLF ammo a try. This'll be fed to my SIGs, a MK25 and a M11-A1.

A couple of questions...please feel free to weigh in if you've had any experience with WOLF.

1. Where can I get ballistics information? What kind of loads are they, mild, medium or extra spicy?

2. I know the difference between a TMJ and a FMJ...but what is a TMJ HP?

3. Any problems with misfires or hangfires?

4. How are they for consistency? Big spreads all over the place or rather tight?

5. Any issues with feeding? Specifically in SIGs?

3. i've shot maybe 500 rounds (9mm, 357mag, 45acp) and never had any issues with feeding or misfires, etc. they are a tad bit on the dirty side.
4. it's been a while since i've shot them, but i don't recall any consistency issues.
5. see 3.

it's great ammo at a great price, if i didn't cast/reload it would likely be one of my top choices.

Yes, I know HP is a hollow point...but how can it be TMJ and HP at the same time?

1. Recently picked some up in .40. As some other CGNer reported recently, it was a bit on the hot side. Feels a little "hotter" than comparable specd Winchester and American Eagle as the other CGNer described.
3. Similar quality jacket/bullet to Winchester and AE. Casings are not always perfectly clean, but it is reloaded ammo, and the casing is the only part that is reused, and even then never so dirty that it affected performance. I also like that the packaging comes "factory sealed". Made purchasing it used from a fellow CGNer easy (just don't have to worry about weird stuff like a few rounds missing from a box or two when you've bought many boxes). Haven't shot that much of it yet, but so far 100% operation with Wolf ammo in hundreds of rounds. The only issue I've had with my .40 has been a single round. It was a reload by a local CGNer and might have been my fault. Checked to see if chamber had a round in it by slightly racking the slide, then shot it. Didn't go off, ejected the round, and finished off the mag. Saw the round I ejected, primer definitely got struck, was honestly wondering if it was a QC problem, but the primer was definitely struck, and it definitely did not go off, so it wasn't like the primer went off without powder. Put it back into the gun, and went off without issue. And again, it wasn't the Wolf but a local reload, and could've been my fault . . . might not have been 100% in battery?
4. More accurate then I am at 25 yards and in any deviation in the accuracy of the ammo is less than that of my shooting. I haven't done any measured testing, but I have seen no decrease in accuracy with Wolf ammo going for 2" and 4" targets at 25 yards.
5. See 3. 100% operation for me.

Summary: Happily surprised that some "budget" ammo (because it's reloaded), is comparable to stuff about 50% more expensive. Neither I nor my gun can tell the difference really. Doesn't even seem any dirtier than the AE either at most maybe 10-15% and might be psychological because I'm shooting "budget" ammo. Would happily buy more.

And just to confirm, we're talking about Wolf ammo in the orange boxes with the black font, and not the black box, with the stylized Wolf caricature on the black box, or at least I am.

I found wolf ammo decent but far from top of the line. It works and feeds fine for the most part. I found it to be really dirty ammo so clean well after you shoot with wolf. Overall for the price point it ain't bad.
 
Wolf ammo has been my biggest surprise this year. Bought some off another CGN member at a very discounted price, 1000 rounds of TMJ in 9mm. Very good in my opinion through my P229. As accurate for me as AE and better than S&B, if you want to believe anecdotal evidence. I compared all three in the same session just to be sure. I'll be reloading TMJ for shooting indoors and Wolf satisfied my curiosity. I don't need to be getting the shakes from elevated levels of lead in my blood. Yes, I am the guy wearing the N95 mask regardless of what or where I am shooting. Go with TMJ and mitigate your risk if shooting high volume indoors. As for the rest of Wolf's product I cannot comment. My round of preference is Speer Gold Dot as it appears to shoot rings of plasma several meters (very cool but expensive).
 
Wolf Hoffman has been making quality reloads for competitive shooters for a long time. We used to ship our fired brass back to Wolf to discount our ammo cost. (Not sure if he still does this).

Wolf ammo, in general, is produced to make specified power factor in IPSC for most guns (5'' or so), so it is fairly "snappy" but possibly not as fast as some.

Like any other ammo, you may need to try a few different styles to see what your gum likes the best.

Just shot 50 rounds in my Desert Eagle 44 mag 240 gr TMJ and very satisfied on the quality, the rounds are hot and accurate, i will order more, no need to reload with this affordable performing ammo... JP.
 
I've shot wolf 9mm, .40s&w and .45acp. Both TMJ and LRN. The lead rounds are really smokey and far more dirty than the TMJ. But overall never had a single problem and I've shot 1000's of them. It's a great buy IMO.
 
Total metal jacket vs full metal jacket:: (if I'm wrong one of the more educated will correct me) - one has a jacket that doesn't cover the entire base of the bullet, just past the seating while the other has a 100% coverage...... but I can't tell you which is which, sorry.....

TMJ is a 100% covered bullet. FMJ can be either or. I had some Winchester component FMJs that had an exposed lead base, and some other bulk stuff (can't remember for the life of me) that were listed as FMJ, but they had 100% copper coverage. Most of the time if it has 100% coverage, they'll list it as TMJ these days.
 
Ive only tried the 45 ACP. I'm on my second case of 1000. Cleaner and more reliable than norinco. No feeding issues. You hard primers. No half loads( Norc ammo did this to me.) Not super snappy.
