i had an auto 5 built in 1936. i had it in the 90's and have fired bri saboted slugs and even such nasty as canadian tire no 8 "brand x". i dont know how many thousands of rounds through it but never had problem. i still kick myself in the as@ because i sold it in 98.

I had a 16 gauge A5 that would not cycle with Imperial Special Long range shells. Not the gun's fault. The shells should have cycled the gun on the heavy setting but they did not. Set to light setting and they worked fine. Match your loads to the right setting and these guns will work. I don't recall any other jams.

It depends how often you shoot. The Auto 5 never had much appeal on the target fields and is mostly a hunting gun that isn't shot very often.
But I sure wish the last guy I shot clays with who used an Auto 5 had one of the magic ones. His gun jammed constantly.
Just asked a good friend who is a guide every fall since 1980 taking out over 100 hunters a year. He has not seen a A5 in a duck or goose blind since the steel shot law was introduced.
So I don't think they are the go to gun any more for ducks or geese.

I've got an '88 built A5, with Invector chokes, and I used it on ducks last year with excellent results. It's only a Light Twelve 2 3/4" gun, but thats all you need if shooting over decoys. Also used it on pheasants, and for skeet, and it's never jammed once! Just make sure you have the spring setting right, and these guns work great!
I don't think anyone that owns or wish they own an a5 is buying one because they are looking for cutting edge technology. I love the fire in this topic, rarely do you see so much passion in this forum about anything except trying to boot short barrel guys.

hmmm, wonder what the a-5 would look like chopped down and dressed up all tacticool?
I think a 18.5" plain barrel with a nice dark chocolate leather cuff would be a sweet gun for trips to the cabin. It has speedfeed and mag cut off, how much more tacticool do you need?
When I called BS, I wasn't trying to get personal or anything...I shoot clays and hunt alot so I shoot alot and see lots of shooting. Most modern auto loaders are very reliable...but when I don't clean my gun for say...six months, it sometimes starts to slow down and sometimes my crappy reloads jam. It's reality...who cares. When people say they have shot "thousands of rounds" without a problem....WOW.
I once was chuckling at an older fella we deer hunt with because he loved his mint condition Auto 5 and it was a beuty. He went on and on about how reliable it was and how it never ever jammed. The very first block, he took one shot and it jammed. I laughed like hell and he got all upset. Later, over beers, he argued that it wasn't a "jam" because the shell didnt eject all the way. To this day he still brags on and on about how his gun has never ever jammed. Its a really nice old gun. I like it because it is nostalgic. I like him too...but I call BS! He is delusional.

I know you were not trying to get personal and I hope you know that when I sort of asked you to identify the BSers I was just stiring the pot. In fact I think memory is very selective and a lot of this most reliable I have ever seen is just that. All this is just fun. Something to do when we can not go shooting. I actually like the a-5 but I will not crown it the best there has ever been.

"Most modern auto loaders are reliable" Hmmm --- I see many jamming problems with the new Beretta's and Browning's at every sporting clays event I referee. All the manufacturers tout that they have the ultimate machine (auto-loaders are machines) that will handle all loads from light target loads ---- I think not. (omho)

dilly was correct. Most modern auto loaders are very reliable. If they were not, top sporting shooters like Anthony Matarese and Scott Robertson to name just two, would not use them.
