How good were Browning Auto 5`s

I don`t quite understand something. Does the front part of the barrel that sits inside the breech rest directly against the forearm? or is mine missing something? kind of weird that the barrel will go forward on friction spring to slam up against the forearm stock. Won`t it wreck stock in very short time?

No worries as long as it sounds like a parts bin recycling it is working properly.

You know there is no other shotgun made that has the two stage trigger that JMB made

on his A5 ,it half sets on the recoil and half cocks on the shell chambering and is ready

to fire onch the shell is chambered ! The Gunny on Hist Channel got a real suprise when

he shot at a bottle and had one one the way and another was off and in the air before

he new it! He said it kicked harder than any shotgun he shot, that was because he was

not aware it would repeat that FAST! The only reason Tom Knapp wouldn't use one is

because it's just too hard to find any mag extensions that would alow him to bust 8 or 9

clays!

It will repeat VERY FAST.

Tom Knapp probably did not use one because Browning did not sponsor him. The sponsor usually only wants the trick shot to push what they got to sell.
I do not know the details but Benelli and Knapp have parted ways and Tom is pushing some type of CZ.

Browning A5 is my favorite gun. It is a true workhorse and designed to last for decades not just a few years. Nothing is build as solid.

Great article on the A5 for those that love them....and hate them. :)

The foreend does not touch the barrel. It is attached to the magazine tube. And there is a metal spacer on the forearm wood, so that the barrel lug slams into it, not the wood. All the force of the returning barrel slamming home is borne by the magazine tube, ultimately.

My a5's barrel ring slams directly into the wood of the forearm. The only metal in my fore arm is the detent ball to secure the mag cap. John BROWNING designed that way. 99% of cracked A5 fore arms crack at the rear..

I never had an A5 previously and I enjoy 20 ga. shotguns so my impulse buy today was a '73 Browning Belgian Auto 5 Light 20ga with the vent rib 28" barrel with mod. choke in about 95-98% condition. Couldn't resist the workmanship and the feel when I shouldered it.

My 2 cents. I once thought the auto 5 to look ugly and ungainly. then ended up with one. Now I have 3. Never a problem , always function . I have shot lots of trap and there are many geese that wish the auto 5 was less reliable. On the other hand if you want to spend 2 grand on a new shotgun , it probably should be superior.

I've got an '88 built A5, with Invector chokes, and I used it on ducks last year with excellent results. It's only a Light Twelve 2 3/4" gun, but thats all you need if shooting over decoys. Also used it on pheasants, and for skeet, and it's never jammed once! Just make sure you have the spring setting right, and these guns work great!

Are female pheasants legal in Ontario?? Here in Saskatchewan they would hang your nuts alongside your birds LOL

My Auto 5 is by far my favorite gun in the safe. I have 3 different barrels for mine, and I absolutely adore the thing. The recoil is a little "heavier" than my fathers' SX1, but still a pleasure to shoot.

I also fail to see the hen ringneck? but keep in mind many of us lowly easterners are forced to hunt pheasants on perserves where either ### is an acceptable target for your favorite pheasant loads. I know I hope to be launching number 4 steel at pheasants and waterfowl out of a light 12 this fall, provided the seller doesn't change his mind about selling it.
