How hard is it to find dummy rounds?

Hi all,

You may have seen my previous post relating to defective snap caps. Well I have been thoroughly convinced not to waste my time with anymore crap like that. In short I would like to find a half a dozen or so 30-06 dummy rounds, just for cycling. What is the best way to go about doing this? I have found a few online but they tend to be expensive/difficult to ship to Canada.

I would suggest going to the reloading section in EE and post a WTB message. Someone there should be able to crank you out a few for a small fee to cover materials and shipping. Sorry I don't reload 30-06 to help you out there.
 
Thanks for the reply. I don't have access to the EE so I will just have to keep my eye out around town. I have heard sometimes the milsurp places carry 30-06 dummy rounds from time to time so I might check the ones around here out.
 
1. buy the cheapest brass cased you can find
2. get a bullet puller (or pull them with a vice, which will leave marks on the bullets)
3. pull the bullets and dump the powder (lawn fertilizer or have some fun burning it)
4. set off the primers by shooting them in your gun, then clean your gun
5. remove the spent primers with a long skinny nail or something to that effect
6. reseat the bullet and fill the case with hot glue from the primer pocket (drilling a hole in the side of the case just below the bullet is best)
7. cut the glue flush with the base of the case.

dummy rounds are ready to go!
 
I was going to do something like this not to long ago too.

I read that someone just seated a bullet in a case with no powder and used an eraser from a pencil for a primer. Dont remember if he drilled a hole or two in it to make it look for like a dummy round. I guess the eraser would give it away.
 
It's worth requesting EE access, even to just keep an eye on the market. Calgary's a big place, pretty much guaranteed someone can hook you up. It wouldn't surprise me if a visit to the Calgary Shooting Centre would be able to get you many as you want.

I got my snap caps from them, Not your typical brand either so they were a decent price. I think I got like 6 9mm ones for 9$ but they had alot for selection. Check on there website they make have them on there

you can, but i like the hot glue for 2 reasons,

1. it's a nice material to absorb the impact of the firing pin and can be re melted and cut flush again after it's been hit alot with the firing pin.

2. when you fill the whole case with hot glue, the bullet can't seat any deeper into the case after many cycling's through the gun.

Thanks for the replies.

I have thought of making my own dummy rounds but I don't really have access to a lot of equipment at the moment plus I only want to make a half a dozen of them or so and as such I don't think it is worth investing in the tools needed to do it myself. Not at this point anyway.

I will try looking at Things Military, The Calgary Shooting Center and Cabela's thank you both for the suggestions!

After my last experience with those A-zoom snap caps I think I would rather stick with dummy rounds. I don't so much want them for dry firing just cycling so simply removing the primer is good enough for me.
