How hard is it to kill a skunk!?!? *UPDATE: HE'S DEAD*

Hello all, I plan on sitting up on my roof in the dark tonight, carrying a FS2000, an "uberpowerful" 858, a G22 and a 5-foot-long 15-pound shotgun. I will be wearing electric ear-muffs, an ultrasonic mosquito repeller, and probably an MP3 player. My flack vest will contain my rangefinder, infrared game tracker, 5000 rounds of ammo, and a pee bottle. Any info on how I am to kill a skunk at 25 yards would be appreciated. Specifically, which piece should I mount my night vision scope on?

I hope to gain some experience for my African safari later this year.

Thank you.

Shooting after dark is just plain dangerous, illegal, and stoopid.
I guess that applies to all the night clay shooting that is done under the lights.

In Ontario it is legal to shoot varmints/predators at night on your own property in defense of livestock. Sxyglock17 might be outside of the regs if he is not on his own property or a licenced agent. It's also legal to hunt racoons at night here.

The rules during the day apply at night. Be sure of your target and what's behind it. I've shot animals at night but been damn sure to follow that rule.

I was aware that night shooting raccoon was legal in Ont, but other types of shooting/hunting was not. I grew up in Fergus and my father use to run Walkers.

The reference to clay shooting after dark was an oversight on my behalf, but this scenario, whether legal or not, does not sound like a great idea to me on alot of different levels. There are better ways to get rid of nuisance skunks.

We agree and for a lot of reasons I wouldn't be firing buckshot at night to get rid of skunk. The chance of ricochet is too great for starters.

I've found the odd skunk in our barn. We keep them out by closing the barn doors and keeping the cat food off the floor. If necessary we trap them and asphyxiate them with exhaust from the tractor.

Well, sorry for putting no faith in .22LR! I bought some veloceters or whatever, even though they jam occasionally in my Walther G22. Damn skunk showed up again, but was WAY more cautious coming out of hiding tonight. It nosed around for quite a bit, then started to climb some lattuce to get in a low broken window (we were wondering how he always got in). Half way up the lattuce I took the shot. Hit him right in the back between the shoulder blades, he froze for a few seconds and then fell to the ground. It was making weird hissing/gurrgling noises so I gave it a head shot and that was it. Not too much stink, I don't think he sprayed.

Thanks for all the info guys, I wouldn't have thought a .22 could do it!

Now, hopefully there was only one ;)

(P.S. I checked with the Town and the CFO in reguards to this stuff ahead of time, seeing as I don't have my hunting license. Town said no problem for preditor protection killing Skunks, Racoons and Coyotes. CFO said he's not the person to ask, but here are some suggestions, it's best to get a letter from the land owner (which I did), make sure it's a registered farm (which I did), and make sure she lets her neighbours know there will be shooting late at night (which she did), and on which nights, then he forwarded me to a MNR person who said to not bait them, but other then that, no problems.)

Well done.

I don't know what the fuss is all about...I shoot at night on my property from time to time, take the same precautions as day time- Know your target and what is beyond.

Night hunting is regularly done in many parts of the world. Over half of the USA states allow it, Australia, Europe etc.

You can figure out how to do most activities safely- If you have an open mind and you want to.

As much as blasting pepe sounds like fun, I'd trap them. Set the traps during the day, sleep all night, check traps next morning.

Besides, sometimes you get a special surprise when you trap them. I trapped an "expectant mother" and she had her kits in the trap. Once realeased she abandoned four of the five kits in the trap.

^ Never seen that before.

What did you end up doing with them?

I looked into keeping them but its illegal in MB to keep wild animals as pets. I gave them to a friend who tried to keep them but they ended up dying.
