Taking advantage of some mature trees in new deer hunting area and want to put up a few treestands.

Will be using the treestand for archery as well as shotgun season so would like to know how high you put your treestands from the ground.

Thanks for all you replies.

no higher than 16 feet if possible! Be carefull of stand placement on ridges and watch out not to face the setting sun. I hunt a particular area that has very mature maples which have very little low cover. I've noticed a real pattern for the deer to skirt beside heavier cover or just inside it where they can look out into the more open timber. My suggestion is to try an use the forks of trees where major limbs join the trunk. This will help break up your outline. Deer tend to look up higher as they walk up hill so keep your stand placement far enough back from any decent inclines or camo yourself well. You definately want to be on the up hill side to use the wind to your advantage and also deer will use ridges to look down insearch of does. By keeping the stand fairly low you increase your target size, reduce negative angles promoting better distance judgement and get better passthroughs.

I used 2 stands on occasion, 1 is around 15 feet up the other about double , 1st is on the top of a slash and really doesn't buy me that much visability but it gets me up off a good trail, the other higher stand is on a Power line and is fantastic for visability. Although I have yet to shoot from either. Seen shooters from both stands the last 3 years but held out for bigger deer.

12- 15 feet max. Remember, the higher you go the less of a target you have or the smaller the kill zone but then again I hunt mostly with a bow from a treestand.
Every treestand hunter should be singing the many praises of a safety harness. Make that a FULL BODY safety harness. These waist belts or seat harnesses only are themselves potentially deadly in a fall situation. Just hang in one for a minute or two and it will be self explanitory.
The waist belt will cut you in half and the seat harness will invert you in a fall situation.

i keep mine around 15ft but once in awhile if i find a good spot i will top the 25 ft mark and yes FULL BODY fall arrest harness is a must and should be in every hunters kit

LOL of course.. I dont want to be a wuss and shoot the damn thing.. I wanna come eye to eye, claw to nail and beat it with my superior agility and bayonet skills!

The type of trees and cover, how far you can see or be seen from, how much you move to look around or prepare to shoot (draw a bow) will help in how high you should or can go.

For the bow I'm at 12 feet. last year I put up a a tree stand at 12 feet for the rifle season. Two weeks before the hunt, we had a terrible wind storm that blew the stand stand down. I wasn't able to put it back up so I chose to cut the legs down to 4 feet. I got my buck on opening day and he was no more than 75feet away from me. There are many people on this site that hunt from ground blinds.
