How important is an expensive m14 scope mount?

you need to remove your front sling loop mount and install a quick detach swivel stud to mount your bipod to

Where's this gap you're referring to?

The gap im referring to is at the front end of the rifle where the stock ferral meets the barrel clamp. The bottom lip of the barrel clamp is nice and snug to the bottom of the ferral, but the face of the clamp now has a very minor gap with the face of the ferral........if that makes sense. LOL

Well it looks like I'm getting a new scope mount. I just sold my buddies custom m305 for him and as a sellers fee he gave me his m14.ca CASM mount.
I believe it's a first gen mount (no iron sight peep hole). Anything I should know about the mount before I install it? It's gonna be topped with a bushnell elite 6-24x40

The only thing to keep in mind I'd to not over tighten the front cantilever screw. Very little tension is needed to make the mount rock solid. Go to the M14.ca site and get the installation instructions . Follow them.

This is the mount I have and if you have a Norinco the loop mount is made of very strong steel. I would mill it off from the inside of the stock if you can or what I did on the last M305 I have been working on was Dremel it off from the inside with a ball grinder. What I like with this mount is it comes with the crews for both the plastic and the wood stocks.

Here is a pick of my rifle...

At this time my mount is not locktite down but it is solid, one hint as a scope saver is do not use steel scope rings Aluminum seem to be softer on your scope.

Obviously don't locktite anything down until you know it's zeroed. Also, the angle of the mount can be adjusted for longer range shooting by playing with the front tension screw (the amount that it sticks out from underneath the front of the rail). I initially installed mine with it flush with the front of the receiver and it was shooting way too high. I've got about 3 mm of the front tension screw sticking out of the bottom now.

Now that I have another Norc M14 on its way (had two in the past, sold'em) I'm following this thread with interest.

Any opinions on the M14.ca scout handguard mount? I'm a fan of the scout scope concept, and it looks as though that low rail would allow me to use the gun without any cheek riser. It looks a lot like the Amega Ranges mount I have on my mini14, which I like very much.

has it really been 7 years LOL
it does go by fast but some of us were around for that debut
still 4 or 5 years, and seems fairly popular

I'd use a mount like the casm or troy battle rail , but everyone knows I love keeping my irons
I have a troy chassis in my closet just in case I get the urge LOL

I kept my Rear irons tho.. they are in a box in my ammo bag.. along with the Allen wrenches to take the mount off :p.
just in-case the scope screws up or something.

On a side note, for those of you using a bipod, what kind of mounts are you guys using?

I just use your average bi pod nub, there's a hole in the stock for one in front of the sling swivel. Get one you can thread, throw a washer and nut on and your good to go

Well I tweeked with my gun today. I realized that the barrel band was really tight into the stock feral (no gap at all as Tony Ben suggested) so I added a couple shims that I has laying around. The gas lock tightened up decently snug at 6 now (and has a small gap) where as before without shims it was tight at 6 with NO GAP. The bottom lip of the band does sit tight on the feral as well now)

I also sanded down some on the inside of the forend of the Norc plastic stock where it was coming into contact with the gun. I also removed my bipod (had it mounted using a swivel stud in the hole at the front/ bottom of the forend) as I noticed the nut inside was contacting the gas cylinder.

I've also added a tacpro cheek riser which should improve groups.

Hopefully some of this will help a little. At this point, I still re installed the scope mount that I had (it will be temporary) and will keep it on until I get something better. I added some loctite so hopefully it will hold for now.

I will report back once I get to shooting her again. Prob gonna pick up some new rings and maybe a vortex crossfire 4-12 this week (the cabelas pine ridge and no name rings were on the rifle when I got it off the EE and the plan was always short term use).

Well I took the gun out today. It now has a CASM mount and a bushnell elite 6-24x40. First time shooting since its been tweeked, and WOW what a difference in groups. Last time was minute of pie plate at best (6-8") and this was my group today at 100m. I was using some old 150 grain Dominion CIL ammo.

This was prone at 100 meters. I know it's not amazing but compared to the 6-8" pie plate/ all over, this is incredible.

if you have a nice walnut GI stock and do that, the leverage of the bipod will eventually crack your stock. that hole is a drainage hole, not a bipod hole. it is the weakest part of the stock. if you have a norc plastic noodle, go for it, you can't make it worse. check the clearance to the gas cylinder from the bolt. better option is to replace the rivet with your bipod stud. don't believe everything you read.

That's a marked improvement there! Glad the CASM worked out well for you! Any inconsistencies from here may well be the rifle and not the scope mount.

Tony.
