How important is an extra 6mm?

It's vital. There are plenty of perfectly good scopes out there that will last their owners a lifetime and then could be passed on to to new owners to use for another lifetime. Between demographics and social trends, if the makers don't come up with some way to convince us we need new stuff they can't maintain, let alone increase their sales volume.

I'm using mostly old Weaver and Bausch&Lomb stuff. When I miss, it's not the gun's fault nor the scope's.
