How is .45 ACP relaoding cheaper then 9mm factory? I don't get it

I keep hearing about people claiming that you can load 45.ACP as cheap as factory 9mm, but now matter who I look at selling components or break it down, .45 is still more expensive then 9mm.

45 ACP w/o brass cost: $0.26/round (wholesale sports: IMI powder, CCI primers, Winchester bulk bullets)
9mm CCI blazer: $0.24/round (wholesale sports)

When you throw brass costs, it's $0.36 / round (once fired brass from marstar).

Then you toss in the start up costs of reloading ($600 for a progressive loader + tumbler)... how is it cheaper? o_O
 
Last time I figured it out it was .12/rnd without brass

$28.99/1000 primers .03/rd
$69.99/1000 bullets 230g LRN .07/rd
$19.00/lb tite group powder .01/rd
 
:s Any places where I should be shopping then? Cause I can't find bullets any cheaper (and in far too many circumstances, the .45 ACP bullet itself is more expensive then 9mm rounds).

WSS:
$32/1lb of powder (average)
$22/100 bullets (Winchester)
$33/1000 primers (CCI)

Always cheaper.

Factory 9mm cartridges sell around here for about C$16.00 a box of 50. New.
Reloaded 45acp lead cartridges should cost you less than C$10.00 a box, including amortizing in 1000 new or once fired cases at C$100.00 per thousand.
Ignatiff has been here less than 3 years and abroad for the rest. Johnny-come-lately just won't cut the mustard.

Hmmm....

And you'd think that when they say bulk bullets that it means cheap bulk bullets. :s And yet somehow the stuff advertised as match grade stuff is like half the price.

Definately food for thought though... maybe a norc 1911 and a full reloading set instead of the HK in 9mm I was looking at....

May I ask where you get your bullets for 7 bucks per hundred? 230gr. LRN cost almost twice that at the bullet barn, and that's including their 15% discount!

I pulled that info from a spreadsheet I did a few months back. They were from WSS. The lowest price they show now(whether they have them or not is another story) are these:

your looking at buying an HK and your worried about the cost of re-loading:slap::p
 
Primers $23/1000 = 0.025 cent's each rd.
Powder Red Dot/Blue Dot $15 a pound = 0.01 cent's each rd.
Bullets 230gr round nose plated $70/1000 = 0.07 cent's each rd.
45acp brass cost zero/nil. I get it for Free.
TOTAL cost per round is $0.10 cent's each rd.
Powder is purchesed in bulk 8-10lb at a time to get a discount price.
Bullets is purchesed in bulk at 30,000 pcs at a time for discount price.
 
Even the OP's own original figures show only an 8% reloading cost increase shooting .45 over 9mm. 2 pennies a round?

To my mind, that's not a significant difference. Given those figures I'd just choose the caliber I had more fun shooting.
 
Bullets should be a lot cheaper!

I think the issue is the cost of your bullets. You s.b getting 1000 200grSWC for about $100 now adays. Your bullets right now are costing you $220/1000. That's pretty pricey. Even if you are looking for FMJ's or CRM's it shouldn't cost more than $120 or so the last time I checked.

Shipping costs of lead bullets are significant. A distributer near the manufacturer would have the best price.

I buy bullets at Hummison in Ancaster (near Hamilton, Ont). DRG brand lead bullets are around $30/500. They have good prices on powder, too.

And nice guys, to boot.
 
The 230 grain FMJ's from Canadian BDX are $ 79.00 for 500.

Works out to about 17 cents a round with the tax. Doesn't include shipping of course.
They also seem to to be kind of chronically out of stock though. The web site says they have some right now, but a phone call may say otherwise...
