how is a H&K P7 restricted?
When i look at the thing the trigger guard is almost at the end of the barrel.

then i look at this cuttaway diagram... that bbl in there is 106mm?!
Ive never actually seen one in person.

The barrel is slightly over 105mm. Because it isn't exactly 105mm it rounds up to 106mm. It's the shortest non-prohib allowed up here.

i also figured that the P7 is unique in its design b/c of how far up the trigger is. Most triggers are behind the barrel or close to the end, while the P7 somehow has it much further forward.

I too have never had the chance of fireing one or seeing one either.
Whats the recoil like?

Because the barrel is so low in the frame, what recoil there is is directed almost straight back, so it has very low recoil. It's a neat design from several standpoints, including the grip safety/squeeze-cocking mechanism, and the gas-delayed blowback action. When you fire this pistol, a small amount of the propellant gas is tapped off into a tube under the barrel, and that gas resists a piston that's attached to the front of the slide, so the gas from a single shot is simultaneously pushing the bullet out the bore, trying to blow the slide OPEN, and trying to keep the slide CLOSED. The downside to this system is it can get fairly hot just above your trigger finger, and it doesn't allow you to use either lead bullets or bullets with any sort of heavy lube on them, since any residue that ends up getting into the under-barrel piston lessens the "delayed blowback" action, and the pistol will try to slam itself to death.

It is a wonderful pistol. I have a shooter and an unfired safe queen in the M8. Great trigger, extracts brass a mile and is very accurate.

One of the most interesting things about the P7 is that the extractor is quite superfluous: the fluted chamber is what extracts the shell and the extractor itself is only there to aid in consistent extraction. So this pistol is pretty good for those in countries where they can carry concealed, as one of the big concerns with people who shoot their carry pistols a lot is that the extractor eventually fails. It's not really a concern with the P7.

I love the P7

The P7 is certainly one of my favorites,( and I do have a few toys) partly b/c of its compact size, its unique safety and such features as a fixed bbl and polygonal rifling. Yes, the bbl gets quite hot, despite the heat shield, but then this pistol was designed for the West German Police at that time,( '70s and '80s) and shooting 100 rds rapid fire was not its designated purpose. MP5s are better for that. It is a very accurate pistol, I love hitting the gongs at 25 and 50m. IPSC plates at 25m pose no problems. Recoil is more than in a full-sized 9mil of course, but what would a pistol be without recoil? An air pistol that's what. Oh, I shoot those quite often too (10m range in my basement) when I don't want to drive out to the range. Sometimes you get lucky: I bought mine ( almost new) a while ago for a third or a quarter what they were worth at the time. The seller didn't realize its true value and neither did I. But he called 2 days later informing me that I got the deal of the decade. Didn't want to insult him by offering to pay more after the fact. Then bought 2 new mags and a custom- made holster plus a double mag pouch from Mitch Rosen, and I'm having fun with the little P7.

What did he do?

I believe he called the origional prohib listing in the FRT into question, causing the eventual change in the guns status.

Are you asking for a history lesson, or are you aware of more details than we on this topic?

Welcome to the board!!!

Thanks for welcoming me back.
I knew what Leon did. I was wondering if the comment was a "dig". I was there when he called the Feds and made his case.
Take Care.
Rob.
