I had two does localized to a hydro cut at the back of our farm. Went out a couple times before gun week with my bow and got busted by them, already in the field when I walked out.
Gun week 3rd day (first day hunting cause of work) I went out early afternoon, like 2pm. Knew I'd have to wait so I sat leaning against a tree at the edge of the cut, and had a nap. Woke at 3, listened then stood watch. Close to 4 shadows were spreading, gonna be dark soon, almost time to head in. Heard a snap behind me in the woods. Leaned out from the tree at low ready, another snap, and a 4 pointer walks out from behind a bush 25 yds away. Waited for him to relax and drop his head, took a bead an inch behind his mid upper leg, and put one straight in the boiler room.
Surprised he took off considering the two inch hole through his lungs. My Lurcher dog (apparently a natural bloodhound) went straight to him, in the dark by the time I got him on the trail. Deer went 75 yards downhill. Made for a workout dragging him out.
My first deer, after many seasons of trying. Git the Mennonites making me summer sausage from the trim.
