How is the 223 for deer hunting in AB doing?

What provinces still outlaw 22 centerfire for big game? I've been hunting in BC for about 40 years and it was always legal that I can remember.
Oilbirda did, until this year.

I believe:
NLD is > .22 with grain weights over 100 and 1500 ft lbs energy
Scova Notia is > .23, with the .223 being verboten
Apparently QC, NT and YK are all .243 minimum

They legalized 22 centerfire. Not only 223. Why go so big when a Hornet can get the job done. Use less powder etc etc.223 is for elk and moose. people always overgun themselves. Hahahaha

Funny you bring that up. I went to hunt with a friend on Haida Gwaii and he used a .22 Hornet. He made a bunch of one shot kills - all under 100 yards. I was skeptical until he proved my concerns completely unfounded. Keep in mind those deer are quite small. Here is a picture of one of the deer we got on that trip beside my Airedale (70 lbs).

All centerfire cartridges are legal in BC for deer, moose, elk. Even the Hornet. :)

But it's very uncommon other than some isolated cases like 1899's friend. Most hunters don't see the really small centerfire cartridges as suitable for their purposes, especially if they only get to hunt a few weeks a year.

NS you can use no4 buck in .410 but not a centrefire .22. Silly.

That's nuckin' futs! Those little .24" pellets are barely flying at a transonic speed (1100fps) and spread to a 24" circle at 20 yards. At best. Even with a full choke, you can probably only keep them down to a 1 foot circle at that range.

We can use pellet guns here in BC for deer, black bear, mountain goat, mountain sheep, cougar, lynx and wolf. Not permitted for elk moose, caribou and bison.

Where are you seeing that? I think your confusing a pellet gun with a modern air rifle of .35 cal minimum.Screenshot_20251110_174045_Adobe Acrobat.jpg

Air rifle, pellet gun, air gun - all the same really, no? Some use smaller pellets, others larger - up to .50 caliber as far as I know.

why not go for headshots anyway if you can? the animal does not bleed itself out but at least the cavity is cleaner when it’s time to gut.
even a neck shot might be better.

Because an animal bleeding out is far better than one that it is not, and head shots are one of the most over rated, smallest kill zones there is and only for internet experts.
