With the AR mags designed to hold 30 rds, i guess it's not a big problem for the spring when leaving those 5rds in there...

So, do you do this ? and how long do you keep those 30/5 mags "fully" loaded

Same question goes for my 15/10 double stack 9mm pistol mags (CZ75).

Thx

I've left the mags for my Beretta loaded for months at a time and have yet to see any ill effects. Mind you, they were pretty fracken still when I got them, so this might be merely softening them up

I leave them fully loaded at the ready, well with all 5 rounds anyway.

I doubt very much that 5 rounds will do anything, and FWIW I don't think 30 rounds would do any damage either. Just keep extra mag springs in case.

I doubt that cops unload their mags after a hard days work.

It should be the loading and unloading that wears the spring. If left loaded (especially with only 5 rounds) they should be fine.

Compressing and uncompressing is what wears out springs. Sitting still will do nothing.

An empty magazine is useless, ALWAYS keep your mags loaded.

Having the opportunity to test pistol mags, I have left Beretta 96 mags loaded for a year with out cycling them. They functioned flawlessly.

OTOH, I saw a pistol that was left with the slide locked open for 18 mos and it didnt fair as well. All springs had to be replaced. Mind you the hammer spring resulted in a beautiful trigger pull.

That's good to know. thx.

I was told in army training, that 30rds C7 mags have to be emptied after 1-2 weeks, to relieve pressure from the mag spring...
I don't know if this comes from the actual B-GL reference book, or if it's just a stupid procedure my instructor had to do during a very peaceful UN tour...

probly more to do with the plastic bodies not being able to hold pressure that long.
