How long do you tumble?

Really depends. At times where I've let it go for too long and the brass is piling up, I'll really load the tumbler and let her go for 4+ hours a load. For smaller batches, maybe an hour or so. When they're clean, I pull 'em. I have forgotten and let them tumble all night... . Wow, were those clean and shiny  :D .

I have my tumbler on for a few hours every night using a timer, I find it takes about 6-9hrs to get the shine I want.

Speaking of tumbling, does anyone have a source of suitably-sized cobcob? I bought some in the pet store and while it works OK, I have a lot of trouble with it getting jammed up in bottleneck cases (and primer pockets if I deprime first.) I tried vibrating some media through a 1/8"" wire mesh and it is much better, but only about 25-30% of it was below 1/8". The rest I can use in straight-wall cases, of course. Places like Kramer Industries (kramerindustriesonline.com) list corncob amd walnut media in various grits (8/12 would be about right, I think) but they have a 50 lb. minimum- + shipping from the US east coast!

- Try Manus Abrasives for Walnut and Corncob grit. They have a Vancouver office.

Alright, here is a question on a similar topic.

How long should one use cleaning media before changing it?

I have been using corn cob cleaning media for about 10,000 rounds now, and have no idea if I should change it or if it is still good for another 10,000.

Just use it until it stops cleaning properly?

I am in the process of cleaning some brass and I was wondering the same thing.

How do you know when to change the media? I only cleaned 80 cases in fresh media and it already looks dirty.

What is the collective wisdom?

I tumble my brass til it is sparkly shiney looking like a newly minted loonie. Sometimes it takes longer than a day and I once forgot to turn it off when I left for a long weekend, nice job on that batch, not sure if I will ever load them they are just too pretty.

I just remove the dust and add a bit of brasso when the media starts to lose effect. My first load of media lasted me many years. I recently purchased a 50 lb bag of crushed walnut and will most likely not use it quite so long again...
