How long for a 25

I just started to shoot skeet. Have shot about 16 rounds in the past week and a half.
I am averaging between 17 and 22 per round. My worst being high 2 and low 6 and 3,4,5 are getting better.

How long did it take before you shot a 25? In rounds or weeks?

Thanks for any and all replies.

Jeff

Took me about a month. I was shooting a Win 97 trench gun! At a gun show I found another '97 with 32" full choke, took 2" off the barrel (cylinder bore at that point I think, no front sight) and within a few months ran 217 birds straight one day.

A Win M42 .410 full choke was next. This was in the day of paper hulls and Ljutic mono wads, plastic hulls were just coming on the scene. With the M42 I had many 25s, 50s and 75s and managed two 100 straights, still have the CIL awards patches.

Fow fun my buddy and I who also had a M42, would shoot high house birds from #7 with full magazine loads, try to break the bird early then see how many pieces of it we could hit. Several times we each got three and four pieces, total five hits from one bird.

The .410 was a mind blower especially in full choke. The slightest error in lead was a miss.

Congrats! A couple of us pistol shooters have been going out lately and someone made the remark "y'know we could save some money if we just went to an open field, yelled 'pull' and fired our guns in the air".....

congrats !!!!!!
when is it going to be my turn ?

Sacha

Hey Sacha - you are going to get there soon... I see how hard you are working at it. Let the break of the target come as a result of you executing proper technique. I just did this over and over. Just remember... Alex is mortal too! :p

Congrats. Were your knees knockin on the last station?

No knees knocking. I sort of didn't realize it until I droped the last shell in the barrel. As I was closing the action I said to myself "I got this ONE." You see, I started on post 3, so I ended up on #2 and I know once I got the fun stations out of the way (5 & 1) everything is else is gravy. I took a deep breath, let it out, and called the target. It came out on a shallow left angle (I love those more than straight up)... and see the target, smooth to the target ... and smoke!

Jealousy is just a way of telling yourself the other guy did something good. Congrats smokem...fred

Thanks everyone. I ended off with that round and went home. Now, what will be interesting is my very next round. When I smoke the next 25 that will make it 50 straight. I know its not all the same day, but I'll take it.

My advice is to have fun and don't worry about numbers, once a target/clay bird is missed you cant shoot it again. Again have fun and next thing you know you'll be running 25's more and more.
By the way the funnest day I had joking and laughing with my squad I ran 100 straight and didn't realize it until the singles event was over. Have fun, shoot straight.

First tip: Don't ever think about 25, think about how much fun your having.

I shot my first 25 after 8 months, shot the second 25 a month after that, shot another 25 the week after the second one. After that sold those 2 guns & was looking for another challenge. Shot 50 last week, missed the 71th out of 75 & shot 74 out of 75. The reason I missed that 71th bird is because I've let the pressure get to me & forgot about how much fun I was having! If you have the right gun fitted for you & love to shoot, don't worry about when you'll hit your first 25 just enjoy the sport.

I have fellow club members that get so stressed out when they go shooting just because they never shot 25 in 3 to 4 years of shooting & plus they get pissed when I go & shoot 25 after just 8 months of shooting! They're being to competitive & miss out on the fun. Now my fun is to shoot more then they do just to rub it in to them! I've even seen one guy that purchased my SX3 just because I had shot two 25's in two weeks! Now he got a few 23's out of it but when he comes in the clubhouse after a round I tell him: It's definitely not the gun because I shot great with it so it must be the shooter!!! We have fun & that's the important thing.

In the end the only thing important about this sport is as like to say: If it makes POW I'm happy, don't worry about the rest.

Joe.

You achived some very remarkable scores shooting with the ammo that was available at time, compared to what shooters have now available to use.
Your 100 straight was a amazing score and even today shooting a 410.
I shot in those days of CIL paper hulls, shot in NSSA competitions, shot a M42 like yours best I was able to achive was a 92 and was not that far out of winning If I remeber correctly 2 birds. I have some of the CIL patches for 100
75,50 & 25 with 12ga. My brother showed me a letter I had got from CIL for shooting my first 25 strait I was 9 years old. I remember my uncle (Dr AE Kuntz) was quite pleased, as he spent many days teaching me how to shoot. I remember haveing problems with L # 5 he brought a full box of shells and I fired them all at # 5 low, I don't think I ever missed a #5 L again.
Only advise I could mention to new shooters is make sure your feet are right before calling for bird, to many shooters have there feet towards house and run out of swing make your feet comfortable to where you will shoot bird.
I was shooting at Ottawa Trap & Skeet many years ago and ended 12ga event with 99/100 tied with Barney Hartman there was no shoot off they counted the longest run to determine winner. I won but never really considered it a win. I will tell you Barney was a amazing shooter one of the very best skeet shooters of all time

Always make sure you hit the first target and then go after the second, by doing this it will build confidence in always hitting that first target and then the second will come in time.
My 2 Cents

I finally got my first 25 after about four years of trying. And wouldn't you know it that my usual shooting buddy wasn't there to shoot my hat. Maybe he's a jinx? He was there yesterday and I couldn't hit crap. Oh well it's all for fun.

I did it !

I started this thread Nov 23, 2009, I started shooting skeet in October.

And today Feb, 21, 2010 I shot my first 25. Felt pretty cool, I blew the next round, but that firtst 25 is neat.

I would like to thank Brad and all the guys at the Connaught Skeet Club for all their help.

Now it's the 100................

Jeff

Congratulations on your first 25, well done. I'm still slugging along...23 and 24 last Thursday. Thought I was finally going to do it during the 24 round, but I missed the low house from #5. The darned thing was flying up there big as life...I can still see it. Guess who had his head off the stock. Guess he was trying to see the bird or something...:(.

"And today Feb, 21, 2010 I shot my first 25."

Hope they made you go shopping for a new hat. :)

Congrats.

I was wearing my new togue, they filled it full of broken birds then threw it up in the air and 6 guys all put 2 shots each into it. Looks like a cheese grater now.
It was a little cold so I still had to wear the togue to finish shooting that day, so I was washing clay dust out of my hair when I got home.

I finally know the answer to this question!!!!
8 years.
About time, to be fair I have shot 32 sporting clays targets without missing, but tonight was my first 25 straight trap targets, tried for 50, but I will take the 25 for now. Too bad they weren't registered targets.71/75 for the night.

One of the old guys around my club claims it costs about $5,000 for your first 25. It depends on how often and how many rounds you shoot. I still haven't broken 25 at skeet, as I'm mostly a trap shooter. With a round or two a month on average I think I still have a while to go. It did take me two years to break 25 at trap, and that was with a Winchester '97.
