How long till we see wide spread Sustenance hunting ?

Theres a fair amount "Hoorah I wont let the government tell me what to do!" which is holding back the proper level of response here in North America. This goes for idiot 20 somethings on spring break, to idiot Rick Grimes wannabe preppers, to idiot boomers who wants to go out to play crib, to idiot hippies who thinking eating garlic and drinking chaga tea is going to prevent them from infecting others. It encompasses all walks of life and political ideologies. Some of these people also think the Japanese are a societal sheep.

Way less then 1% of the population requiring hospital assistance is more then enough to overwhelm our medical system. And thats not even factoring every other thing that puts people in the hospital. Canada has 3~ beds per 1000 people.

And yet our hospitals are not overwhelmed..... We live in a "free healthcare" country where people feel the need to take themselves or their kids to the hospital when they have a sniffle or a really bad acne breakout.....

I'm not discounting what you are saying, I think this needs to be taken seriously..... Practice social distancing, hyper sanitize etc.... Don't go out if you don't have to etc.....

It's a big leap to jumping into citiot's shooting cows and loading them in the back of the Prius though....
 
Hmm. Wonder how many are actually set up for "sustenance hunting"? Depending where you are, taking a rifle and heading out for the first time is going to result in lots of miles walked and not much to show for it. Snares - preferably need brass snare wire - ideally with the sliding lock clips - got any? Fishing - need a net - got one? If you do down a critter, do you know how to get the insides out? How to get it home? Is it safe to eat or is it diseased? How are you going to keep it from spoiling without power? Am thinking many think an SKS and case of shells will solve their problem - probably will be the first to go down if it gets "real"...

I heard a story once abut during tough economic times a fellow who was a known "sustenance" hunter was stopped by an understanding game warden while driving out of the woods with load of firewood.

Game warden looked at BillyBob, into the back of the truck and said "Well Billy, looks like you should get home in a hurry. Looks like your firewood is bleeding to death."

funny discussion about a friend this saturday and we came with the same conclusion: most people doesnt know how to remove the entrails let s put aside taking care properly of the meat ...

if you ever try to fish with a net i want to hear the outcome. i fished for perch and pike when i was a kid and even with pros it was not fish at every drop ...

Ha! I do know that nets produce better than hooks, but as per my father-in-law, now passed on, when times were very tough during a strike at a boat access only logging camp on West Coast during 1950's, could always depend on a James Island Fly to get fish. (Apparently, for those that do not know, James Island was location of CIL explosives factory in those days... dynamite, etc. for mining and whatnot.)

Death rate for those infected is now at 4.36% worldwide. In Italy, it's 9.26%.

The real concern is a collapse of the economy from an extended shutdown. If things drag on too long, it will be worse than the great depression. I agree that it's too early to start talking about subsistence hunting yet, but when people start running out of money and there's no work, the wildlife is going to take a hammering.

Italy took no precautions before it was way too late.... They are also 3x the population of Canada on 1/9th of the surface area .... also, one of the most unsanitary countries I have ever been to, (second behind France)....

Again, I am not saying to not take this seriously, but comparing us to the worst case scenario isnt exactly going to help....

Italy has 60 million people, Canada has 37 million. So that's less than double, not 3 times the population.

If it comes to subsistence hunting, that will be VERY short lived anyways. You put over 2 million people in the bush shooting anything with a heartbeat, there will will be nothing left with a year and we're all screwed anyways.
