I've recently got the urge to get back into the hobby. Used to have a FAC before the new laws were introduced. I currently do not have a licence of any kind.

Anyways I want to get a restricted PAL and acquire a pistol or two.
What kind of timeframe am I looking at?
Also any advice, do's and don'ts, etc that you can give me will be appreciated.

I've been reading the safety course pfd's that are posted on this site and I think I will challenge the test instead of taking the courses.

Great site btw. Lot's of info, I've been reading non stop and will continue to do so.
Thanks.

Braiot;

Before you start forking out cash for the tests; see if you can find the certificate, when you passed your FAC. You can use the certificate as proof of proficiency. As to waiting period, don't get into too much of a hurry; Government agencies are slow and this one I think is the slowest.

While I can't condone this; but I've heard of people applying to an armoured car company, to "speed up" the process and when their PAL comes through, they say thanks but no thanks to the job.

ps. welcome to Gunnutz

Well I know it was just before July 1, 1993 because I didn't have to complete any safety courses. My dad took me into the local RCMP station where I filled out some forms, payed some money and walked out with my FAC.
aaaahhhh, the good ol' days.

I've looked high and low for my FAC but I can't find it. I guess I'll just have to take the test.

Soli, that is quicker than I thought it would be. With any luck, my process will be just as fast.

Took my buddy 7weeks after he challenged the courses for restricted and non-restricted. Go challenge the exam. It is very common sense. My buddy got the books for both tests at the public library and got 99%. If you have some sense of firearms and with a little studying, the test will be a piece of cake.

No problemo big fella!!.........unless waiting 7weeks is going to lose you a great deal on a "popper". If so, flip some "Queen-backs" to a licensed and trusted friend so he can pick-up the discounted gun for you. Once licensed he can transfer it to you.

cheers and good luck!

Waiting is no problem, I have no urgent rush. I was just making sure there wasn't a huge backlog or some other hiccup.

Also, do I have to join a firing range or gun club to get a restricted PAL? I read that it isn't written into the law, but it is strongly encouraged. Pretty well insisted upon. Is that true?

Nope..I have a restricted firearms license and I'm club-less. The club helps in obtaining a permanent transfer permit.

Thanks for the info Stevr.
I'm joining right away anyways. The one I'm joining throws the cost of the courses/tests into the membership costs. Save a little cash that way since I'll eventually be joining anyway.

I studied all weekend, now I just have to find time to challenge. Within the next 2 weeks for sure.
