If I came into The AR 15/Shooting world today...... What would I buy? How many AR15's do I own? What is considered Crazy?
Well depending on budget of course that dictates a lot right there.
Budget aside I would buy into a system first. For AR15 it would be a system that has been making parts to a high standard and or buying parts that are compatible with quality parts I currently own, this will serve me well for say the next fifteen years.
For arguments sake say I had a budget of $10000 this year and say another $5000 for next year. Or stretch this out for 3 years buying time with initial costs being the worst where would I start.
Also through in a say limited yet decent amount of range trips averaging 12 to 15 times a years shooting around 200rds a day and 1 to 2 days at a carbine course etc shooting 500 to 1000rds.
2 companies I would start with would be for example:
1. Colt Canada system
2. Colt USA
3. Similar companies BCM, LMT etc you could include as well.
I would use these companies as a base above all others, and would stand by this statement "where most Canadians should probably start in 2017" unless you really have limited funds.
If money is not an issue I would still recommend these as your best options when all things considered otherwise companies like KAC, HK would be an option as well.
Why buy into a system ?
Well if laws change for one having spare parts that will last 20 years or longer is a great asset.
If you intend to shoot/train on a regular basis so parts become extremely expensive or difficult or unobatanium in the future. Good to have lots of the same company or very close in comparison to your AR15 line of weapons so tolerances are very close. Also you get more familiar with the capabilities of that particular Brand say COLT (TDP)= The Data Plan.
I would aim for 2 or 3 lowers
and 3 uppers + spare parts
Barrels, Bolts, gas rings, etc.
Barrels lengths: (10.5,11.5, 14.5, 15.7, 16.1, 18.5) Short, medium, long. Barrel profile will leave up too the shooter to determine based on his or her objectives or goals.
Light, Medium, Heavy.
Barrel Twist for a base 1/7 first.
Also some armorer tools as well.
Example Brownells, Gieselle.
Conclussion
I would buy 1 complete Colt Canada rifle 15.7 with spare upper receiver complete(10.5 or 11.6).
1. scope (Elcan)
2. Red Dot Eotech or Aimpoint)
3. Magazines (GEN 3 PMAGS, USGI Colts or equivalent)
Ammo.
Surefire Light (scout)
Possible a Glock 17/19 HKVP9 or M&P9mm. with Surefire X300 or whatever.
There is a perfect system
What is crazy?
Well there is the Webster definition of crazy below:
http://www.webster-dictionary.org/definition/crazy
How does Crazy pertain to owning AR15? All try here.
When rational thought & reason are abandoned with no practical justification can be given ,and the line of thought by the individual is disproportionate to any attainable goals or no objective is stated in the conclusion for the attended purpose.
Example: Owning dozens of registered lower receivers of mismatched parts with few completed guns and no explanation given as to why. This might be a sign of crazy. Now if the individual says he collects lowers for the purpose of collecting the trade marks and he is artistic and its a form of art, well then that makes sense. Really it depends on the individual and other exterior signs could lead you to thinking he is in fact crazy.
I would also say it could be a form of stupid.
For me I was buying AR15's to get what I could get and before I could Really even see a system in my mind of exactly what I wanted to do considering the climate of gun buying in early 2000's. Now today its actually very easy.
The options out there are awesome. In the old days getting TDP parts and worrying about getting that Milspec rifle were real. Why bother with crap clone brands really, even if they are up to standard and beyond. A lot "Spoiled Brats" these days.
Me I buy AR15's because i like the history of them and the practicality of them. Most importantly because high quality brands are the best options in most cases.
How many do I own?
Answer: Not Enough
