How many AR's in Canada?

ISTR that the importation figures for the 80-90's were something like 50,000+ rifles, with many of them now "unaccounted" for....

I think Nimrod had a number that he pulled from a government hearing somewhere that said the number was 5000 or so.

Here it is:

I did some yahoo searching and came up with this as a rough number of AR-15s in Canada:

Mr. Wappel: So the military would use the C-7, which is the military rifle and the civilian people, numbering some 5,000, would use the equivalent of this, which is the AR-15 and its variants.

LCol Kaulbach: Yes.

Close enough for government work...

The 5000 referred to by the DCRA guy was the then current membership of DCRA. I'm sure there isn't a 1:1 ratio of AR's to members and of course others outside DCRA members would have them. This figure would represent a lower limit at the time.

Geez, even those lower numbers seem low to me... Most of the guys/gals I know have or have owned a AR15, I've personally owned 3 of them...

I wouldn't get too carried away with estimates, I remember having some argument with a dickhead at a gun club who simply wouldn't believe the statistics I was giving him on the total number of shotguns in the UK with a mag capacity over 2 rounds (which are much more heavily restricted in law than 2 rounds or less shotguns). To get one here you either have to have a pest control reason, or use it for practical shotgun.

Well, anyway, the total number for the whole of GB is less than 3,000 people owning less than 8,000 large cap. shotguns, and he simply didn't believe it was that small a number. Those are the official statistics.

However, if you spend all your time around people shooting guns and gun clubs, you get a distorted view of how many are out there.

Given the Canadian bans, I suspect the AR-15 has become a lot more popular than it was, as it's one of the few semi-auto rifles that is still legal and readily available. I'd be surprised if there are over 20,000 registered in Canada, based on a rough guess from the CFC stats on restricted firearms.

my buddytold me that there was a difference of 15,000 from registered vs imported. that is why the Lieberals have not banned it yet. the axxholes are clinging to the vain hope that those with unregistered ar15 will come forward and register them. yea right
