Further if I remember the old rumor mill, Beretta ended up losing out because of social ties between upper brass and S&W. I think dowries and some plantation lands might have been involved too.It was a very tinfoil hat story I heard at the very least filled with daytime soap opera drama.
The S&W rep who helped put the deal together was was partly the reason, but it didn't hurt that he got S&W to agree to buy back the parts inventory that the force had for the revolvers being replaced.
I was told that inventory was the largest such parts inventory outside of S&W themselves. A figure of a million dollars was mentioned, though I have no way to know how accurate that was. The information came from impecable sources (the S&W rep himself and a little birdy inside the armoury at DEPOT at the time).

I have also heard the same story about the parts inventory.
It would interesting to see what else S&W did to sweeten the deal as it would be very important to them not to lose big customers like the RCMP. Gun companies make lots of sales to individuals based on their law enforcement customers.

When I first shot the Beretta 96D Centurion I liked it. The trigger pull was long but there was something about an all metal firearm that I liked.
Fast forward to the introduction of the PX4 to the CBSA. I had read very few positive comments and heard even less positive comments from friends of mine that were on the arming courses. I heard of 40% of the guns broken right out of the box. I heard of many guns being sent back while still in training and my opinion was none to high.
I finally shot the PX4 and I was actually happy with it. I am a glock person. I like the PX4. I think it shoots well, feels good in the hand, and is light enough to wear all the time. The problem is, with anything italian, is reliability. It is not as reliable as a Glock, an M&P, or a sig sauer. It is also expensive. I think it is/was a poor choice. Glock, M&P, and Sig Sauer are all pistols that could have been had for cheaper and are more reliable with a proven track record.

No they all just switched to sigs. The better question is did they destroy all of the old guns wasting our tax dollars or sell them as used?
No they all didn't, VPD switched to SIG 226 DAK in .40, the other city PD's all use Glock. Many of VPD's Beretta 96D's were nearing the end of their service life, so it made sense to go to something new and be done with the Beretta's. They got in under the wire and were able to trade them in. FYI, it's not the PD that decides to scrap ex police gun's, it's the bureaucrats that mandated that one.
Came a long way from having the gun locked in the back of the car. I would have thought they would have ended up with RCMP hand me downs, but nope. Poorest province in the Country have one of the most expensive guns.
Id go for a 45 myself.
Well you can, just move to Delta PD and make their ERT.
The you too can be shooting a gun using early 1900's ammo design.
Hell, you can do that almost anywhere.
9mm came out before .45acp after all.

Yup, 1902 for the 9mm Luger and 1904 for the .45 ACP.
It was probably mentioned in here but....the Edmonton Police Service patrol use the G22 .40S&W except for their Tactical unit which use SIG. I'm not sure of the specific model but my best guess would be the SIG P226 DAK in .40S&W. Also, they are the only ones to carry rail mounted lights on their pistols.
