How Many Eyes Open w/ Red Dot Sight?

How many eyes open with your red dot sight?

I recently acquired my first red dot sight, an Aimpoint CompML3. It is a great unit - very fast to acquire a sight picture and seemingly well made.

I am curious if most people use these like an illuminated ACOG with both eyes open, or if the preferred method is to close one eye. I find it works either way, but suspect experience will eventually lend me a preference.

This is a friendly poll to satisfy my (and possibly others) curiosity, no heated debates welcome! :p Thanks for the input and comments, cheers!
 
Both eyes but make sure the eye that looks through the scope is your dominant one. Having both eyes open is more natural for your brain and I remember when shooting in competition, you would have both eyes open for handguns with your non-aiming glass lens covered (not completely) with scotch tape or something like that such as a blind made specially for this .

In hunting, you will be able to keep track of what's happening much better when both eyes are open. If you try it, you will find that it doesn't take long to become completely natural.

Yes I agree, I became comfortable using a Bindon ACOG with both eyes open. I get a bit of doubling with the dot, but I assume it will go away in time.

Do you see more than one dot even with one eye closed? I you do, you probably have something that is somewhat common as you get older such as cataracts, astigmatism, and an eyeball which is non completely round.

I have the same problem but with practice, I can identify the stronger dot which is usually the correct one to use. I'm getting close to 75 and my eyesight is not perfect but I don't use glasses and I'm able to get by very easily.

I have discussed this situation with my eye specialist but correcting for this is not a daily requirement although he told me that eventually, I will probably require treatment for cataracts but not yet.

I am right handed and left eye dominant(non scope eye). For me the aimpoint with both eyes open is absolutely the perfect optic for my eye 'setup' as my dominant eye sees the target and my weak eye superimposes the dot perfectly, i can shoot accurately out as far as my eye sight allows with both eyes open. Target acquisition is super fast when you can use both eyes.
 
Tactically speaking, I've been taught that with basically any sight, it is better to keep both eyes open. Acquiring targets is quicker as you have a complete picture, not only the tube vision given by the scope or red dot sight. The reason for this is that you no longer need to acquire a target, then re-acquire through the sights. The only time I could see it necessary to only use one eye is when you are shooting at something that is only visible through a scope.

I have also heard that, with scopes at least, it is not good for your eyes to look through a scope with only one eye. I don't remember the exact explanation, but it was something akin to looking through a microscope with one eye shut, it just messes up your eye sight after a while...

No, thankfully I see only one dot when I have one eye closed. I remember some blurriness and doubling when initially getting accustomed to the ACOG as well. I have heard of the problem you describe but haven't run into it yet... then again I'm still in my 30's. :p
 
With a magnified scope and shooting for groups, I'll use both eyes open then fine tune and shoot with only the dominant eye. This helps keep the eye strain from happening which could lead to your reticle disappearing from your view.

Reflex sight. Both eyes open. Again unless shooting for groups. Also you have to look at the target and not the reticle with Eotech.

If you're not sure which eye is your dominant eye (for newer shooters only since I know most on this site already know this. ). Make a fist with your dominant hand and put your thumb out. pick a reference point on a wall to line up your thumb with. Now close one eye and look at it. The eye that has almost no movement from both eyes to the single eye is your dominant eye. The one where the thumb moves 2" or so is your non dominant eye.
 
Interesting replies and poll results, not entirely different from what I expected. Seems a pretty clear majority (5+ to 1) use both eyes open, with some preferring to close one eye (had to give the goon squad a few choices too, else they'd just vote anyhow without actually having an opinion :p). I probably should've added an option for sometimes using one, sometimes the other...
