how many in a collection, well that depends on what you want to collect

take the enfield rifle, a modest collection is about a dozen. That will give you a nice little sample of a broad crossection. Now a good collection your looking at at least 40, then you can start to specialize, say LongBranch production. Don't forget to add a few sporters like the Parker Hales and the EAL (civi version) into the collection. Now a serious collection of enfields is well over 100. Nagant rifles are similar.

Pistols I don't really collect but 1911's, Tokarovs, Hi-Powers, Lugers, those all have many different varients, a collection can get huge fast.

Or you can try to collect a sampling of WW2 sidearms, your still looking at over a dozen just for starters.

So it all depends on what your trying to acheive with your collection.

Myself I have a little shooting collection, with a few WW2 Canadian pistols lumped in.

As for what I wanted out of this was : I wanted to get a sense of what a ‘real ‘collection was, as my initial post says; if there was some must ‘have’s ’ for a collection, and to avoid potential bad buys. I actually didn’t expect people to have collections much larger then 15, shows what I know. I guess it is a good thing I did make this post.

A real collection is what you make of it there is no universal rule that says you must have at least one 1911, one P.38 and a Luger before you can call it a collection. This is your hobby / sport buy what appeals to you and what you enjoy.

Also keep in mind that this is not a competition, there are people out there who have been at this game a lot longer and have far deeper pockets. :D

How about over 25 in just restricted and prohibs, over 25 in WWII rifles and pre WWI,some post WWII and under 25 in modern shotguns and rifles.

The one with the most toys, wins!!!!!!!!:p

Regards,
Henry;)

I am always curious why a newbie regularly posts a thread like this and no I will not respond.

Its sad about that tragic boating accident that wiped out your entire collection except for that small rusted .22 rifle that somehow managed to float huh? :D

I try only to own firearms I will actually use with some regularity, that managers to keep my collection somewhat small.

Im sure a couple of the guys I hang around with are well over 150, if not 200.... Not every gun is worth 1500 bucks, its not hard to accumulate a bunch of different stuff if that's what your into...

Only getting into firearms a few years back, and looking at what I have now, I say it could be scary in 20-30 years. I'm sure its the same for a bunch of other guys on here in their 20s and 30s....

I lied in my vote! Last year I had 17 guns so that is what I put down. This year I have TWO: a Browning Buckmark .22LR and a Norinco NZ85B 9mm.

As for what to collect, try a little bit of everything at first. I had automatics and revolvers, new guns, used guns, and antiques. I had a reproduction cap-and-ball black powder revolver and a reproduction flintlock and, if you haven't tried both, you're missing a hoot! Both are more fun to load than to fire and both are a LOT of fun to fire.

If I only had a 12(6), my total would have been higher: a dear friend, now deceased, wanted to sell me his heavily engraved PPK with gold inlays. Wonderfully accurate in spite of its short barrel -- I wonder what became of it?

Between inheritances, and just letting it be known you take in old guns, it's pretty easy to believe people have 100-200+ firearms. Lots of people will just give grampa's guns away to their "Gunnut Friend." Also, in the mid 90's for some odd reason, a lot of people culled their collections, I'm sure a few made out like bandits in those couple of years.

Myself, I've only got what I've purchased, so not nearly enough.

About one a month, on average.

I didn't want to mention Ganderite, but seeing as you're here, the pics of your collection, are a long term inspiration to me.
