how many guns I NEED as a hunter

Oh, I'll never get rid of the guns I have, and after the bills are paid my money is mine, not "ours". I tend to wait until she buys something shiny, like the $1300 on a dang treadmill that sits in our basement now, I run out a month latter and spent $900 on a new bow. It's all good. People say why? I say why not.

Just the other night, wife asked me how much $$$$$ I have in guns and gear now.....answer - gee honey, I never realy figured it out. But if I die, ###### is to be the only one selling or dealing with my collection. She tried to continue the conversation but I took for the crapper fast as to avoid any further discussion. The crapper has gotten me out of many a situation. Works like a charm.....as does having new guns delivered to your buddies place to avoid any questions. Not so easy when you come in the house with another gun cabinet though!!!!

I did. She said when payless starts selling pistols for $30 I can have as many as I want so STFU.

As far as I care, I need one in every caliber, one of each for a friend and two of everything I think that looks pretty. My wife knows if she doesn't like it, she will have to deal with it. I'll spend my money on what I want and I still provide for her everything she needs and then some.
guess we know who has the kahonnies in this family :p

First wife cost me half a house & then some.... a lot more selective
with No. 2 ( who has lasted 3 times as long - so far ! ) but then again,
she has her own guns. Nice "task apportionment" at home too - she
never cleans a gun or reloads ammunition ... and I never touch the
vaccuum cleaner. We get along fine ...

Don't need big cajones ... just a clear understanding of "what's what"

I can see the requirement for half a dozen rifles easy enough,
but only a couple of shotguns ??? Should be just as many.
They all have different purposes & suitability :D

I've got me a good little collection, but every now and again the wifey gives me that look when I'm gettin' set to by a new boom-stick. So I'm am going to pass along my redneck logic so you guys can use it too....I need certain firearms for certain jobs (wife don't know about crossover, bullet design, and reloading).
1 target practice, plinking- one quality bolt action .22
2 varmit, target, -one rifle .223-.260 caliber
3 general hunting- one rifle .270-.30 caliber, one back-up rifle same or similar
(what if your scope gets bumped or a friend shows up?)
4 large game- one rifle .30 mag - what ever is huge and cool, one back-up
5 migratory birds/ turkey- 12 ga , pick your poison what size or action, one
one spare for buddies
6 small game/ upland birds- .410-20 ga. I have a SxS does it for me.
Now you can effectively have atleast 9 rifles. Not to mention a couple of handguns because if you don't buy them now who knows if you'll be allowed to in the years to come. Milsurp is an easy one- it's a part of history how can you not own several.

Hope this logic helps you guys, it atleast gets my wifey to roll her eyes and leave me be....

You left out a black powder gun for muzzleloader season, and a 12-gauge with a rifled slug barrel for deer in shotgun-only areas, and a tacticool shotgun for zombies...:)

The Little Mrs. and myself are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. It has been laughable how we are so much different but, hey, we have been married over thirty years and have two wonderful children. My daughter tolerates the outdoors and my son loves the outdoors. The bottom line is compromise and mutual respect. My wife would never begrudge me any piece of equipment to peruse my passion for the outdoors and I respect her wishes also. After the hunting season is over it is my wife's time and if she wants to go on a holiday in the middle of winter then we are gone. I don't give a rat's ass where as long as she is happy. I hate laying on the beach but when we go on vacation I lay on the beach thinking about the up coming hunting season. For all you young guys out there, take heed, mutual respect and compromise will go one hell of a long ways.

If i had to pare it down to three choices it would be

one 22 rimfire
one 375 H&H
one 12 Bore Shotgun

If i was only given one choice it would be a 12 Bore shotgun
Between birdshot buckshot and slugs it could do it all

what is this NEED you talk about?

this is what i think is bare bones:

1) nice 22LR
2) 12 guage
3) big game rifle, preferably in a standard caliber
4) CZ858 or SKS for plinking and a truck gun
5) handgun of any sort (the more people who own restricted the better)

Without reading all of the other posts.....If you only bought things because you "Needed" them, you would have an empty house!!!

Thats good news! I was worried what I was going to take if I got drawn for Goat

why the sarcasm? my 870 with rifled barrel shoots 3" groups (outside to outside) at 125 yards and i think there would be enough energy at 200 yards to down a goat;) havent tried 200 yard groups yet but i think it would be good enough...

HAve your factored in enviromental considerations *think stainless metals and synthetic stocks*, as well as terrain, your gonna want a gun for dense bush as well as one for open terrain and another for snow also factor in weight too;)

A 7 1/2 lb (unscoped) gun that will shoot 3" groups @ 100yds! Considering the odds of getting drawn for Goat here, I think I might not choose this option.

You should also factor in geography. I have a heavy barrel rifle for shooting on the open plains, a light rifle for walking in mountains. Remind your wife that as long as you are buying guns you probably can't afford a mistress.
