Let's use IPSC as an example (Production and Open) - How many magazines would a shooter go through for each stage? Is there a minimum required? What would be ideal?

Thanks.

Depends how good of a shot you are! :) ;) A stage with steel at 30 yds may take every mag you have......

A short course may require only one mag, where a long/field course may require 5 mags. So you cannot really base your decision upon a COF.

I would suggest at least 6 mags is a good start. You have to imagine what you would do if one mag broke. Also, having charged mags ready to go for the stage ahead saves you time. You could probably get by with 5 min, but that to me is leaving very little room. I have 7 mags for my Para and wish I had a few more.

I tend to see most shooters with 6 mags in total when heading to the line to shoot. 4 on the belt and 2 in pockets, 1 which is the feeder and the other being the mag they will start the COF with.

As for total number of mags, it depends. I have about 15 mags for my G17, I load em before the match and then dont usually have to load anymore while at the range. Also, not having to reuse a mag can be handy if your shooting in bad weather and your mags are getting dropped in water and or mud, or perhaps its a dry range and the dust is getting inside the mags when dropped.

A Dozen Minimum for ANY Self Loading Pistol

My preference is to have a least a dozen magazines for any pistol. In IPSC Matches in the rain it is a dismal sight to see those with few mags retreiving theirs from mud puddles or bootprints where they have stood on their own mag or the range officer following their progress did.
Stuff happens eh!
Magazines get damaged or may or may not work just when you need them to.
Try dropping your magazine onto a concrete floor a few times IF the foregoing doesnt impress you much, just as would happen in an indoor match. Magazines with base pads land base down then "bounce".
What I have seen many times as a NROI RO is a $1000 pistol with too few good mags. You do get what you pay for. For some pistols ten mags would cost you $500.00.
Recently shot the CPCA Duty Gun Match with only four mags as that is the LIMIT you can carry. Great that it was on a grassy range with no concrete sidewalks.
I always rotate my mags so with a minimum of six that means twelve mags would give you two sets. Also the best part of having lots of mags as you are not "consumed" with loading mags as the CRO pushes people along to keep the match going.

With a 32 round field course...that means 4 mags minumum...possibly 5 depending on where you do your mag changes...

It's a very good idea to go to the line "fully topped up" so if you have 5 mag pouches...you should have 6 mags...

I would consider this a minimum

heh, I'm going to get some of the NIB magnets and see if I can cobble together a "magnetic" pouch for those stupid "Magazine on table" stages.

I had that idea too HB, a nice magnetic necklace would work too. dropped down the shirt so you could just stick the mags to the shirt.

+1 , I can see the merit of having a stage where you have to run to a gun, but loaded from the holster is my preference.

I tried that one, Lee Valley tools do (or used to) a magnetic belt clip for holding tools etc with a decent NbFeB magnet.

Problem is a full mag is too heavy (40 cal 180Gr) and will slip off. Cargo pants are much cheaper and the extra pockets hold mags much better ;-)

Oh, and in answer to the original question 6 mags with 5 pouches on the belt, a couple of extra rounds to 'top off' the mag after you have loaded the pistol on the line. With a velcro inner and outer belt you can jam an extra round between the two before you go to the line and load and make ready. Or alternatively a Zippo lighter pouch makes a handy pouch for a couple of rounds.
