Ok folks, lots of new magnums out there, lets pick the losers.
How many of the 'New Magnums' will die before the decade is out?

Why are people so obssesed with slagging magnums and new calibres? Nothing better to do?
Some might die quickly, some might be here to stay, and some might fade away with time, who really cares

I think some of the new rounds are pointless. Well, OK, all of 'em have 'points'
Out of the whole batch though, I can't see more than a few making the cut.
A cartridge like the 323WSM for example. Damn fine cartridge, but what does it do that isn't already done?
On the other hand, the 270WSM does do better than the standard, and just might find a small niche. Albiet very small

I like the 338 WM myself. No, it's not new, but it IS a magnum, and it's not gonna die anytime soon.

I disagree with you J/C most of the new cartridges are doing it differently and better than the old standards.
More efficiently, faster, lighter and with less recoil in many cases.... this is a far cry from nothing new or already done. This new technology has led to the developement of new powders, bullets and materials that hopefully will only improve modern firearms and our enjoyment of them.
Yeah some of them will not make in the market place... but I would hesitate to say which ones.
Remember when everyone predicted the quick demise of the WSM's.... well they are doing just fine with a goodly portion of the market share in N/A.
I am saddened by the inabilty of the SAUM's to sell and they are virtually already gone... and the WSSM's are sketchy in the varmint hunting market.
As far as the .325WSM goes I really think it will fly.. time will tell.

Yeah, i like the .325, and who knows, the 338, was a very slow starter, maybe the .325 will do the same.
As to the efficiency of the new cartridges, do you really think that the average Joe blow (Sorry MD) is going to study that up and use it in making a decision?

All I see was a legitimate poll or question being posed, same as the 50 bear defence threads but hardly trolling.
Calling people "trolls" is closer to trolling in my book.
Keep it civil guys, Foxer and I will do the modding, self appointed ones aren't needed, although we sure do like a tip every now and then.

It is all about advertising. Look at the .243 versus the 6mm. I am not swayed by the rag writers, because I have seen too many times how they flip flop when money is involved. I don't even get the rags anymore. But I am over 50 and set in my ways.
I would strongly disagree regarding the death of the Remington Ultra Magnums (RUM). These cartridges have established their place firmly among the long range shooters and hunters who can effectively utilize the specific characteristics of each. The 338 EDGE which is coming on strong is based off the 300 RUM case and necked up to the 338 and handles the 300 grain SMK great. The 7mm RUM is popular for the super flat trajectory as is the 300 RUM and are capable of handling the heavier bullets, leaving more powder room than their counterparts (7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag) Funny how there has been no mention of the Weatherby mags in this thread. Now that they are available in a low cost factory rifle, the Vangard series, you can consider them on stage with the others. The SAUM fell to Winchesters huge advertising budget which focused its attention as always to the American market. Ammo and rifles where made available in perfect timing with the advertising, something Remington couldn't do.

Weatherby has been dying for the last twenty years.

Weatherby charges too much for their ammo and unfortunately no one else really makes a lot of loads except for the 300 wby, so if you are not a handloader, then its a problem. Two great cartridges are the 257 and 270 Wby. The 257 is a awesome deer cartridge, but due to Weatherby marketing, it will never get its share of public support. A lot of it is marketing and not whether or not its a good cartridge.

Selling more (shinier, faster, cooler, more comforable etc) guns is what gun manufacturers do. And that's a good thing (ya ya it has limits). Think about the new guys, should they settle for what was new when you started shooting? Did you settle for what was new to your grandfather? The history of firearms continues to evolve, don't buy em if you don't want them, but let it go already.
Someday your kids'll be shooting synthetic cartridges that are edible upon ejection. They'll taste like strawberries and be full of vitamins and goodness.....and ain't nothin this thread is gonna do about it.
p.s. the .44-40 Winchester is the BEST ALL ROUND cartridge EVER! Its ALL ANYONE should need

And by this logic we'd all accept the .44-40 and .303brit as the be-all and end-all of cartridge design.
good point and for the most part they still are!!! Ive yet to see the evolution of the grizzly into something so big and scary that the older cartridges couldnt stop it
I started on .3006, and will finish with it. I remember in likly bc when i was a kid, the conservation officer heading in to find a grizzly gone bad and my dad asking him what he would shoot it with, he motioned toward the truck,".3006 of course".........guess they must be bigger today huh??
