Last November I took my first deer with an H&H bolt action in .256 Mannlicher with open sights. The rifle was made in about 1904 and did the job admirably at about 80 yards. Working up suitable handloads was the only problem :~)
I've done pretty decent with my 38-55; it's an '03 ( if I recall correctly ). I've had to cast oversize bullets to get it to work nicely.
I made a great shot with it this season; but honestly that great shot was preceded by several not great shots. I'd wounded a Muley doe and when she came out the other side it was ladder sight time. 290 paces! If I hadn't wounded her already I'd have never tried the shot though...too far. But she was DRT, 255 grain cast just behind the front shoulder; low.
My daughter wants to come hunting this season... I've got a 360 BP 2 1/4 express cape rifle that is going to get used by her; I'm thinking. We'll see...
I'm gonna go grouse hunting soon as it opens. I'll use my side by side for deer in the shotgun with shot only and my sergeants model snider for deer and bear. That gun is the most accurate Snider I've ever seen! Still gonna have to keep the shots close . Those iron sights are hard enough at a range. In the bush they become invisible in poor light conditions.
Holy crap yes!!
My favorite Vetterli is my go-to squirrel rifle. 330 grains of cast lead for the blacks.... they can hide but the slug goes right through the limb no problem. Chuckle.
Cheers

ps "Use" is not "Abuse" ... get'm out.
I use bismuth and load with black powder and fiber wads. I am limited far more by my shooting than the slightly lower velocity of the black powder loads.
I hunt with modern flintlock long rifles hand-built to be identical to originals, but no, not real antiques - unless you count my .45-70 RB, but it's got a modern stock and barrel. I guess it counts though...
