Gentlemen,
...have used your knowledge and your M1 Garand (CMP) or one from a gun show to give the Garanditis Plague to family, friends, members at a shooting range, etc., which in turn has caused them to have a Credit Card meltdown??! I know there are a lot of great stories out there on this one!

I hear you Clancy, bought mine off a returned Canadian soldier from Bosnia.
He was getting out of the service and had this Danish VAR M1 30-06, in packing grease for sale.
Got it from him in a dark alley in a nearby city....
Funniest thing about it the serial number last three digits matched my Sqn # at the time....###X441.... ( 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron!)

we bought 15 m1D's when they first came in that hurt the old account for a bit .I stll have 1 left as well as a 1955 Springfield in mint condition I've had for about 16years and I still haven't pulled the trigger

Mark.... you HAVE to sell me that Springfield.... that's the year I was born!!

I am unsure of your depth of knowledge concerning Canadian military use of the Garand Clancy, but I shall tell you this: Alot of people are well aware of the fact that the joint American/Canadian First Special Service Force of WW2 fame were issued US small arms and equipment.

However during the years of 1953-56 at NATO European RCAF airbases and radar stations the 30-06 M1 Garand was issued to Canadian airmen who were to defend these high value targets in case of WW3 with the Evil Empire.

Once the Canadian military as a whole decided on the adoption of the FN 7.62 Self Loading Rilfe, and issued them, these poor ole Garands were taken out of service.....

Here I have spoken with two retired RCAF veterans and they personally prefered the Garand....they said it seemed to kick less and were slightly more accurate than the FN rifle that became standard issue.

There was a moment in time when Canada very seriously considered harmonizing ALL its equipment with the Americans. A collector friend of mine has a prematurely issued official Canadian Army training pamphlet that speaks of the M1 Garand (by some official name) as the new service rifle. Not RCAF but Army. The synchronization was even supposed to extend to M60 tanks at one point when the Centurions were up for refit. But Canadian politics has a painfully handy anti-American tendancy, and no doubt Pearson's Liberals played it.

The Air Force in Europe did indeed like the Garand for matches and base defence duties. An old tube-trained electronics technician in Moose Jaw told many stories of Garands.
