How many of you use your m14 for deer hunting?

Gah i feel like moving to Canada after seeing the latest proposed changes to our arms act. It makes me wander if my AR will turn up at all now :(

Oh no. Dare I ask what?

Has anything spurred these changes or is it just antis pushing their irrational views on everyone else?

This year my M14s will be my rifle of choice for deer I live on the Queen Charlotte's islands HAA-HAA I'm a lucky man!
They are small but you are allowed to shoot lots of them.
Freezer don't care which rifle is used to fill it.

We basically gave the anti-gun senior police a smack down in a high court case, when they attempted to reclassify a lot of semi autos as "military style semi automatics", which require a special endorsement on your firearms license to own, as well as some other red tape (plus they have to be registered). We argued that the police have no power to change what is legally recognized as being in line with current legislation, and the high court agreed ruling in our favour. The judge in the case went a few steps further, ruling that a "military pattern, free standing pistol grip" (one feature that will make a semi auto an MSSA under our law), is of a very specific design and not just any old pistol grip. She also ruled that pistol grips are a safety feature, allowing the shooter to have better control of the firearm. Thus AR's, AK's etc started popping up with civilian after market free standing grips. The powers at be have obviously gotten pissy about it and this is their retaliation. They couldn't win in the high court because their argument was so weak, now it seems as though they want the bill to be rushed through under urgency so we can't bog it down and quash it with submissions - basically by passing the whole democratic process.

The new bill also proposes to make it a lot harder to import paint ball and air soft guns.

And it also seems as though the police want the sporting semi auto mag limit changed from 7 rounds to 5.

I shot my buck last season with my scoped M14s, one shot, one kill :). I used 168gr BTHP Winchester Supreme ammo (my rifle LOVES the 168gr stuff). I was in a blind for that but on my fall moose hunt, I carried it for miles through the bush. As was mentioned before, a good sling is key.

Sorry to hear the bad news from NZ.

I hunted with my 305 a few times. It is long and heavy. I cut down the flash, so now it is just heavy. Not bad if taken bare bones, but with a good mount, scope and all the other "must have" accessories, it gets there in the MG class.
As for chambering a round when one sees the animal.... this is something else imported from the New-Zealand recommendations for hunting? (sad face here) Where I hunt, I'd dare to say that fiddling with the safety is a noise factor, nevermind chambering a round !

in NZ its taught as a good hunting practise to not stalk with a round chambered and the saftey off.. with a bolt gun thats no issue, as you can just half the bolt.. some people try and translate it to all firearms.. and lets face it, its just not practical on some types of rifle..

personally i just use my safety

Same here fenix. Everybody I hunt with just hunts loaded up with the safety on even with bolt actions.

On a more positive note from NZ, the new arms bill looks like it will be going before a select committee, so givin enough submissions we may be able to squash this annoying little #### roach

thats good to hear. The police should spend their time actually stopping the growing rate of petty and violent crimes around our citys and towns rather than wailing on law abiding gun owners that dont cause any problems...

i guess this is an issue the western-world over though

 I have never been more jealous. I see living in NZ in my future.

me and the wife have been thinking the same thing. Heck, i think my business would fit in real well down there ;)

as for the weight argument..... i'm gonna call baloney for the most part :D
my "bigger" game gun is a model 70 winnie, 7mm rem mag, bushnell 3200 elite 3-9x40, stud mounted harris bipod (6-9") , BOSS brake, and a real nice sling

my road hunting truck gun for deer and moose trips is an iron sighted standard configured m14s/usgi rifle in a custom composite stock.

my under 100 yard, walking thru the thick stuff or ambushing rifle is and always will be my trusty BSA no1 mk3 .303 brit with scope and sling

the winnie is the heaviest by a couple pounds, and still wieghs more than my standard config m14s with arms mount and bushnell optic installed

i guess everyone starts to compare to the latest greatest, lightest rifles seen these days..... which used to be geared for sheep hunters, who recoil be damned, needed to pack as light as possible, rifle included.

nevr had a single problem carrying any of the above three rifles on which ever hunt they were needed for. I'm disabled with a pelvic/lower spine injury too boot.

the m14s is an excellent rifle for hunting pretty much anything in north america with exceptions of course. maybe not an ideal cartridge for the largest of game, griz, bison ect..... but given an appropriate range, shot placement and bullet choice, withe the .308 they are all dead.
the M14s is an excellent .308 delivery system when it comes to hunting applications. rugged, affordable to buy, reasonably affordable to feed and simple to maintain once you get the hang of it.

use it for camping, fun & protection

I use my M14 for every thing. I hunt with it, I target shoot with it & I carry it at work when in the field for protection. I work in Forestry and find the M14 great for a all around fun after work plinking and keeping the odd agressive bear at bay with a shot in the air. Luckly nothing more needed when carrying it. I usually do not have the room to carry several firearms and the M14 works grat to fill multiple rolls and works awesome for deer out to 300 m with my optics (1 to 6 power).
