I have both arctic birch & laminate... So I didn't vote... You need to add the third choice of BOTH! Ya baby! YA!

Since I am not collecting SKS's like some here. My '52 came with a laminated stock and I have no problems with that. There was some cracking prob's with the solid birch stocks and I intend to shoot mine. My concern, even with getting a "shooter" was getting one in very good condition and that came about. The ###ing out of the serial number on a refurb with replaced solid wood stock would have bothered me asthetically speaking. The new laminated stock had one serial number stamped in and, to the non experienced, looks like it was originally manufactured that way. The balance of the serial numbers all match (no electropencil), the polishing out of the bolt to the original finish makes the rifle look absolutely georgeous. So, in short, second choice to getting an "unfired" SKS, is the way mine arrived...

I got a birch. Now, I haven't told my gunsmith yet, cause he's not going to be happy, but I stripped, stained and laquered mine. I just don't think the museum of history is going to send agents to my premisis to enterogate me and demand an explanation. For what it's worth, it looks really good.
I don't know where I stand in this poll.
