I don't know where you are, but the woodland caribou population in insular Newfoundland has suffered severe fragmentation among 'herds'. (I expect the same is true of the George River herd in Labrador.) There is considerably more dispersal into smaller groups than used to be the case. With resultant negative effects on things like calf mortality, predation, etc. Sometimes when you hear people say, "I am seeing more caribou", they and/or others tend to think, "there must be more caribou". When, unfortunately, it isn't actually the case. They're just seeing caribou in places where they weren't ordinarily present previously.

Yes, that would be out of the ordinary. And explained by that population fragmentation. In your area, probably of what has traditionally been called the Corner Brook Lakes herd or the introduced population in the Blow-Me-Down Mountains.

Not under the new NWT Wildlife Act, as an outfitter we found 70% of harvest were carrying .224FMJ's under the hide. The .24 rule stopped that legally.
